Hi,
First semester freshman year was academically horrible for me. I wasn't accustomed to 'self study' and part of me still had senioritis going on. I had terrible study strategies. I would study for hours PASSIVELY rather than actively, so no matter how long I studied, it didn't help me on tests. Bottom line is that I failed 2 out of 3 of my classes.

First semester freshman year:
Linguistics: A
Chemistry: C-
Biology: C-

However, I've retaken them and earned As in them. I've also been earning As ever since, because I decided to step up and change my studying techniques. I take winter & summer session classes and earned As in them also. I put in 100x more effort.

I'm currently a Junior right now. Do you think I have a chance even though I failed 2 classes my first semester of freshman year? To be frank, I have no valid excuses for these grades besides the fact that I did not know how to study and I did not use my time efficiently.

Should be fine as long as you're making "A"s now and retook any grades under a "C". Focus now on cGPA and sGPA.

First off a C- is not failing... a F is failing.
Adcoms are aware many students have difficulty adjusting to college. Basically the only thing these C-s are going to do is drag down your GPAs slightly...keep doing well and maintain a competitive GPA and it won't be 2 C-s when you were a freshman that holds you back.

^^ agreed... you're fine! I got one C in multi variable Calc my sophomore year when I was still an engineering major and I was accepted, it's not the end of the world!

As long as you get your application GPAs up to compensate for the lower grades, those C-s won't hold you back.

Also, using the word "failed" in this context is taking hyperbole to a whole new level.

You seem to have omitted some info here. Which two classes did you fail?

Oh, wait... You don't mean... Oh, no...

DAMMIT.

You are NOT -- I repeat, NOT -- to use these classes to answer an application essay prompt about some time you failed at something. Have I made myself clear?

What's worse than failing a class?

Failing a secondary question.

@HomeSkool : Just to be perfectly clear, the SDN standard for the Face-Palm gesture involves Captain Picard pix, not statuary, however apparently relevant. Try to do better next time.

Nope. There’s never been a doctor in history who had a C-, let alone literally every third post in preallo.
