Is there anything students do to show interest (letters, calls, ect.) that the adcom at Dartmouth likes/hates? What could help get you in off a wait-list?

did you send them a letter of intent? if you would definitely go there if they accepted you, it'd be a good idea. other than that, probably the usual updates, etc....

good luck!

Dartmouth does not have a rank-ordered wait list nor is it broken down into priority groups. This suggests that they pick from the wait-list for reasons other than simply grades and MCAT scores.
If you have new information to send, such as grades or other new things that you may have done, send it. It isn't over until its over. The number of places that may be available varies greatly from year to year.

At this point in the game, so much centers around name recognition. The more times the adcom members sees/hears your name, the more likely it is they'll pull you out when they go through the files again. That's why I recommend being proactive and staying in touch with the admissions committee every 2-3 weeks. Send updates of your recent activities, new recommendation letters, new transcripts, new information that you didn't have a chance to mention in your application essays, and even just general enthusiastic letters about how much you want to attend Dartmouth and (more importantly) why specifically it is the right school for you. I also recommend writing instead of calling -- calls only reach one person (probably a disempowered office asst who can't help your application) while letters and even emails are usually distributed to the committee.

Best of luck!

This is what I heard at my Dartmouth interview (not word-for-word):

The ad com really tries to create a dynamic, diverse class. They choose people based on many factors beyond scores. When someone refuses an acceptance, the ad com sits down and tries to find someone in the waitlist pool who will fill the void left in the incoming class.

I can only assume that this means that they kind of categorize applicants and take waitlistees from the same "category" as the person who was accepted originally.

This kind of strikes my sense of humor funny: sort of like the jock, the brain, the princess, the spaz and the f*ck up from the Breakfast Club!

Anyway, good luck with the waitlist. Maybe I'll see you at Dartmouth in the fall!! I'm getting so excited!

yeah, no kidding... i remember them saying that too. maybe you should find the people on sdn who dropped and try to imitate them...

but it kinda makes you wonder which one you are... just hope i'm not the f--k up or the basket-case!!

hope to see you in august, littlelady.
