Some of the surgeons at my school also have experience operating on skin cancer. One of them mentioned that I could get involved with him and start to work on a few projects.

One issue is that although these papers would be related to derm, they would be published in surgical journals. Does that matter at all?

The main concern I have is spending all of my time working with this surgeon and not spending enough time working with derm faculty, getting to know people and making connections.

What do you guys think?

The more the merrier. Ideally you would be able to work with both the surgeon as well as your derm faculty thereby doubling your chances of publication. I wouldn't be so quick to knock the surgical journals. They may not be as well recognized by potential derm interviewers but their impact factor may be even greater than that of our literature.
