Hello,

So I worked in a company that required a really different skill set than what I am good at (it was a business related position). But I just recently got laid off before the 3 months trial period ends even though I work really hard. So my question is...do I include this experience in my AACOMAS application?

@Goro it would be really nice if you can give me some advice on this as well!

Thanks in advance!

I was in a similar position. I got laid off from the project I was working on. Nothing wrong with this. It would make sense to include it because not including it would bring on a time gap unaccounted for.

But it was less than 3 months...I am just not sure if it is NECESSARY to include it. I heard from others saying that don't include things that won't help with your application lol

Its your call. I see no harm. Having a time or work gap might be something to consider.

Did you have any problems during the application process for including it?

No I did not. But tbh I included it because my job function was working as a contractor for the CDC in public health for the area quarantine station during the Ebola outbreak.. If anything It was a major talking point in my interview though it was less than 6 months.

I wouldn't include it if it was less than three months. Usually you should put meaningful experiences.

Also, your job doesn't seem like a healthcare related position, so I would omit it and then explain how you were looking for a job during those three months.

If you have too large of a gap, then I would add it and just be honest then.

Don't include. Millions of applications. Nobody will be adding up time frames. If they do and wonder, it'll be at an interview. Nobody would decline to interview someone over a 3 month gap. Considering most people applying are privileged kids, they might think it's normal and you just took a vacation.

You can.

Hmm...But will I get into trouble if the admission people find out about this work experience during the interview and that I did not include it in my application? Is there any risks of not listing this particular work experience in my AACOMAS app? I just don't want to jeopardize anything.

I think you're looking into this too much. I believe the application looks for meaningful experiences. If it wasn't meaningful to you, you don't need to disclose it. Adcoms won't care unless you had a huge gap unaccounted for. If they do ask, you can just explain to them how you were working as a temp for several weeks but did not feel like it was a good fit for you, so you decided to go look for another position that fit you better.

They're not going to red flag you because you were looking for a job that was a good fit for you.

You are having permed paranoia. How can anyone find out unless you tell them? It's medical school, not the CIA.

Did the employer lay you off because you did something like steal from the owner or some other problem that would result in a news story? Is the employer likely to call every med school and say don't hire this person because he assaulted patients? Sometimes employers lay people off because of financial reasons and it has nothing to do with the quality of the employee, but the employee feels that it must have been something he or she did. Some companies hire people planning to not work them more than 90 days.

AACOM does not verify employment and depends on the person reporting to follow their rules of reporting, otherwise they and thus the medical school has no way of knowing if you don't tell anyone. So read the rules and make your decision appropriately.

I guess I am being paranoid since I have been working so hard towards getting into medicine and I am just afraid of making any mistakes.

So to make things a bit more clear...I did not do anything bad during my employment it was just that they don't have enough funding for my position.
What concerns me is the time gap you guys mentioned. I took a month break with my family after my graduation and I spent the next three months looking for a job. After I got laid off I spent one month setting my volunteers/post bachelor-course retake up. So if I don't include this job experience I will have a total of 8 months gap time...and if I do include it at least there will only be a 4 months break before my 3 months employment and followed by a one month break before I started my retakes. I have light volunteering throughout those time.

What do you guys think? I am sorry for asking so many questions and I really really appreciate your response.

If it was due to funding issues, then I would include it just so it doesn't look like such a large gap. Life happens and adcoms understand this. This isn't your fault.

What you should do is to explain how this experience helped you grow and mature, etc.

That's what I get for not reading more than the first two words of a sentence.

Layoffs are the new normal in this economy. They are different from terminations for cause. Employers don't have to justify them, and nobody expects you to explain them.

Then put it on your application and IF they ask tell them your position ended due to funding reasons and move on. But guess what, they won't care and probably won't even ask unless you bring it up. The only way it might would get notice would be if it was in the medical field. But you just tell them the truth, Let go of the premed anxiety.

I know that's why you're paranoid because I have been there. Now as someone that has crossed that bridge I'm telling you to calm down because I know what that bridge looks like. You'll be fine if you omit it. Don't make a big deal from nothing.
