Getting LORs if you're not stellar

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When you are doing your sub-I in what you are interested in, and the dept knows it, they expect that you are going to ask for LORs. Do your best and really gun (not to be confused with gunning) the rotation. To Gun means going full force - Read up but don't show off obnoxiously. Know whats going on, ect.

The reason its hard to Wow people in 3rd year is bc you are learning the ropes - even toward the end because the rotations differ enough in the day to day goings on. You will be familiar enough with "what is expected" of you to do to WOW people as a fourth year.

A side note, all nose to the grindstone really stops after you get the LORs. You get off to interview, get treated a little better by everyone, and no shelf exams 🙂

I've got all my 3 LORs in (none of which are from residency programs - DO school here - anyway, should I "scrap" one of them in favor of 1 from a residency program or should I try to get 2-3 from residency programs? 1 I have is in the field I'm looking to pursue, the other 2 are from a general surgeon preceptor and OBGYN preceptor. I am considering attaining one from an IM preceptor I had during core but may not. I do have a neurology rotation at a residency program that has a residency in the field I am looking to pursue and could try to get one from that individual as a "connection" as my 2nd and a 3rd from the residency program PD in a field I'm looking to go into? I could also ask a surgeon I did research with, as well? Kinda confused, I have the potential to get ... 6-8 LORs total? I'm at the beginning of my 4th year ...

Yeah, if you can get a letter from a residency in the field you're interested in, that will hold more weight than a letter from a preceptor in an unrelated field.

Yeah, I already have 1 in the field I'm looking to go into. Just wasn't sure his LOR should be scrapped for one who is a PD or attending at a residency program. Or, should I have 2 from the field I want to go into (1 preceptor-based, the other from a residency program?)

Thanks
