Hi guys,

I wanted to ask a quick question to those of you whom have already beent hrough this whole admissions process. I recently submitted my AADSAS app and found out it was sent out on the 11th!!!

I was real excited since i hear this can take quite some time since they are rpetty slow over there.

What i was wondering was, when do you think schools will start looking at these apps that have already been sent, ie, when should i expect to start recieving mail?

Here is my info:

gpa: 3.44
DAT: aa 17/pat 18
plenty of leadership, shadowing, research, volunteer service and i thought a strong essay (but who knows what they are looking for there!)

Cant wait to hear back,

Get ready class of 08, our year of fun has started!!!

Wow ADDSAS already sent out your app? WHen did you submit the online app to ADDSAS?

I looks like me and you have very similar starts and are pretty much in the same boat. I too have around a 3.5 gpa and tons of extracurrs. Though I haven't taken my DAT yet. So you have any suggestions for me on how to prepare for it.

Best of luck to ya!

Sorry but i can't help to notice how soon your application was sent out. Can I ask you how you found out that they sent out your application??? Do you have a ID #?

Hi Guys,

Actually my application and my transcripts were sent already...
but am not sure when would the universities start looking at it!!

SAL😳

The date they look at your app. is going to vary from school to school.

The most important thing for schools right now is to get their incoming class situated and underway.

Mid-July is probably when MOST schools will start thinking about admission for the upcoming year.

First, however, they will send out secondaries. After they receive those back, they will probably hold them for a little while until the incoming class is well underway.

jmac,

Here are my observations given the minimal information I have about you:

Your GPA is average (probably very close to the mean for applicants this year).

Your DAT scores are below average (especially that 17 academic score). More and more people are getting 19s+ on the DAT now, and the average seems to be rising from application cycle to cycle.

Your extras: research, shadowing, and volunteering are what ALL applicants have done. Those items used to show the adcoms that you had lots of determination, but now they are quite commonplace. That isn't to say that you don't have determination, it is just to say that 99% of the other applicants do also!

On a scale of 1-10 (1 being denied at every school, and 10 being accepted to every school), I would give you a general rating of 6.

Now some caveats: I don't know you, and so any advice in this realm is really not very applicable. Based on your stats I think my evaluations are VERY valid, but personality can count for a lot.

Also, your app might look terrible at Harvard or UCSF, but great at other schools. Apply wisely!

Good luck with your application!

I refuse to believe that the average dental school applicant's GPA now is around 3.45. I know that the people who freq. visit this forum generally have high GPA, but this group does not represent your average applicant. I think your average dental school applicant (who prob won't bother to visit this forum) has a GPA average around 3.2-3.3 and a DAT score of around 17. Those were the national averages last year and I seriously doubt that in one years time those averages can jump to 3.45 and 19. For example here at Tufts i know most of the predents in my year and i would say their average GPA is more around 3.2.

And when you say that most people have tons of extracurr./volunteering/reseach I doubt that too. Again I think your judgement is based on people who you talk to or see on these forums and these people do not represent your average applicant.

I know dental schools have certainly gotten more competitive but someone with a 3.45 GPA and tons of extracurr./volunteering/reseach and a 19+ DAT score will get into 90+ of dental school expect for maybe like Harvard.

Just my opinion

Freedy,

What were the stats for 2002?

The stats for 2000 were:

National averages(2000)
SCience GPA: 3.25
Cum GPA:3.35
DAT
ACA:18.5
Per:17.7
Total SCience:18.3

That was 2000! I believe those stats have been raised after 4 years?

I thin it also depends on where you apply. In california the stats are high because everyonbe wants to live here. My stats as follows

Science GPA 3.25
Academic 20
PAT 15
RC 20
Bio 23
Cem 23
O chem 20
QR 15

I have research,volunteer, and shadowing
I know the stats are low for the PAT however I met with the admissions at Case Western and he said that would not keep me out of the school. It means that I would have to work harder on the simulation lab.

Freedy,

To what you may don't want to believe. The stats is increasing this year. And they (adea) anticipates that it will be more next year.

Last year for UCSF:

GPA: 3.4 DAT (aa): 21 PAT: 19

This year for UCSF:

GPA: 3.5 DAT (aa): 21 PAT: 19.

The DAT and PAT scores have been somewhat consistant for ucsf in the last few years. However, a jump of .1 in one year is kind of noticeable. My class will have some of the most talented students, with 30 in DAT and 4.0 GPA.

I'm sure the trend is the same for most schools, not only us. Wait until you go to interview, and you'll see.

Actually, it seems like the opposite from what you are saying, freedyx3. It seems like SDN has a large predominance of low GPAs and very high DATs. There are a lot of people around here with 3.3-2.9 GPAs who got into a lot of schools, mostly because of 20+ DATs. Of the most regular posters, almost all have 20+ DATs and most have GPAs below the matriculating average.

I do think that SDNers are more likely to have a stronger interest in dentistry, and this shines through during the application and interview process. I also would think they would be more prepared and do the right things that help one's chances.

Also, bear in mind that UCSF may be the most competitive school in the country to get into. It is a UC school with a low class size, great location, strong rep, and low tuition. If I was a CA resident and holding acceptances from every school in America, I would likely go there. I am surprised to hear their averages are that low. I know that Minnesota has higher numbers even though the application pool is much smaller, the school costs twice as much, the location scares off a lot of people, and the class is larger.

Well I'm not sure what to believe but I sure hope the GPA has not gone up too far. It'll make my stats look like garabage. I just have a feeling that the average GPA for this application year will be around 3.3, and DAT around 19. But of course I could be completely off.
