I tried to match into dermatology while simultaneously couples matching and found out yesterday that I was unsuccessful. I know that I have a one year PGY1 position in a big city with many radiology programs, just won't know until thursday which program it is. My wife has a categorical position in the same city. My question is, is it possible/likely to be able to get a PGY2 radiology position during next year's match in that city that will start right after my intern year? I am AOA with excellent board scores and feel that I would be a good candidate for radiology, it's just that it might be difficult to be able to start my PGY2 year. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

My thought is I hope the spot goes to someone with an interest in radiology instead.

Ha! Join the club. The rumor is there are a lot of qualified US med students (with 260+ step 1's) that didn't match into rads this year. Thus, I think competition for those rare PGY2 openings (in your city) is going to be tougher in 2010 than in times past. It also won't help that you will be going up against people who have shown a commitment to Radiology as a field. That being said, I think getting into a PGY2 spot also involves a good deal luck and working connections, so never say never.
