So I'm back from a long hiatus of not visiting sdn. Now I'm ready to succumb to the addiction once more. :scared:

My question: what can I do now to get ready to submit everything for the upcoming cycle on the first day?

I have all my letters ready, personal statement relatively done, DAT in. Is there anything anyone suggests we prepare in advance? I don't know if I'm missing anything crucial.

Thank you all! (I wonder if all the old faces are still here 😀)

P.S. Any recommendations for schools (I know, sorry, everyone's asking this here), my gpa 3.6, science 3.5, dat: 23

You can't do anything except focus on the Personal Statement. I would get that done ASAP, that was the longest part of my applicant and it took me a few weeks to complete it. Once that's done, everything else will be a breeze.

cool thanks! i just have to shorten my ridiculously long statement....

I am so pumped and ready to go!

good luck, guys! 🙂

just wondering, why does it take few weeks to complete personal statement?
is it because you revise it multiple times? isnt it just a simple one page essay?

It's good to walk away from it and not do it in one sitting. It's also good for people to read it besides friends and family that can give honest feedback. Grammar checks are always good if you have a writing center on campus or know people who are just skilled in that department. You're used to your own writing and you know what you are trying to say, but is it clear to another reader? Redundancies and awkward sentence structure might mess up the flow of the whole thing.

No one knows how important of a role the PS in plays in admissions. But it's the one place to show who you are besides besides just a list of statistics. So it may as well be coherent and easy to read.

Hey Dusk! Long time no see 🙂

I think you are very on top of it with having your DAT and all your LORs done. Are you having your LORs submitted electronically?

Also, deciding on which schools to apply to is always tricky. I usually try and refrain from recommending certain schools because it is not as cut and dry as "oh, your numbers look good, apply here" lol. When I was applying, I started by weeding out all schools that had less than 25% OOS entering class. I felt this was not worth my time to apply to such a school since my chances are so low at getting in to begin with. Next, I looked at what LORs I could get and tried to maximize the number of schools on that list that I could meet the LOR requirements for. I also looked at the schools that I did not have the pre-reqs for and cut those ones out as well. Finally, I settled on 12 schools if I remember correctly. Hope this helps! 👍

Also, about my PS: I had about 5 different topics when I was writing my PS. I probably had 4-5 different versions on how to present each topic, so I had anywhere from 20-25 versions of my PS... not kidding. Once I narrowed it down to exactly what I wanted to say, and decided on what I could not fit in, I finally got it down to under the character limit haha.

Ahhh the great Dusk in the flesh (well sorta ). Just wanted to thank you for your breakdown. I know I'm gona sound a little weird but I cant tell how many times I read your post while I was preparing for the DAT. Your story inspired me and gave me the strength to do well on my test as well. Thank you!!!!

I'm not really helping with your question but oh well..

Best of luck on the applications to all of us! =)

Thanks for all the help Bereno!! Yeah, I'm having all my letters submitted electronically. I have them in interfolio also, I know one prof is in vacation at germany... so if he doesn't respond, i'll have to use that. It looks like I'll have one biology, one biochem, one dentist, and one research prof.

My sis is applying to various med school's, so that kinda makes it easy, my list is gonna be similar to hers. But yeah, that's definitely great advice. I need to make myself go through the dental guidebook....

And wow!! I only have like 3 versions, and now I feel like I'm slacking on the personal statement! haha, I finally managed to get mine down to 4500.... Hope it's good :/

Thanks for the concern! Yeah I definitely will go through that book extensively tomorrow. I'm such a slacker, haven't even finalized my list yet, just have a general idea.

Does anyone know what time the application opens on June 4th? Is it midnight?

What book are you referring to? Is it a list of schools and their GPA/DAT ranges sort of thing? Because I'm looking to narrow down my list of schools as well and that would be really helpful. I know of predents.com but the more resources the better

ADEA official guidebook to Dental Schools. you can purchase it from the ADEA website

Isn't that the same as going to each school's individual website statistics?

Compact and in one place in a standard format is super handy. Especially the breakdown tables in the front. And there's some stats in there that you wouldn't find on their sites. You could get by without, bit it's worth the cost.
