it's called loans. it's what almost all dental students use to pay for their education. get off your lazy butt and do a search, if you can't figure this out, dental school is not for you. here's a hint: "fafsa".

at your interviews they'll have a little section on the breakdown of fees/tuitions/loans.

wow you guys are ruthless. but phremius is right. most dental students pay their tuition through loans. there will probably be information given out to you during the interview. 🙂

Federal and/or private loans are usually used to pay tuition and cover living expenses. As others have mentioned every interview devotes at least an hour for discussing financial matters.

Temper, temper...

Don't be so mean, you guys...

Yeah, but as others have said I think loans play a big role~ But I don't know much about it either. All the financial aid sessions in which they discuss loans and stuff at the interviews go right over my head...

worry about $ already? As for most of us, we are worried about getting in!!

Yup. Very few dental students actually have the personal funds to pay for dental school outright. When you attend interviews many dental schools will have a presentation on financial aid and will walk you through the process. It really isn't as daunting as it may seem.

i hope what i am trying to say does not come out mean or offensive. i had one interview already, and of 10 interviewees, four had parents who were dentists. so i am assuming that a lot of current dental students also had parents who are dentists. i mean, don't your parents make enough money to pay for dental school without getting loans? i guess i am asking if anyone knows like, at a private school, what percentage of the students pay without loans? common, if your parents are dentists, and they save a little, don't they have enough to pay for their children's education? i am asking this because my dad insists on paying for my dental school education. no, we are not rich. and no, he is not a doctor or lawyer. sooo, is my dad crazy?

just because you're a dentist doesn't mean that you are rich. i guess ill try to answer your question without getting offended.

my dad is a physician (somewhat similar in terms of income compared to dentists) and he is not paying for my dental school education. first of all, physcians and dentists are their own bosses, therefore, they completely supply their own retirement, unlike a business where they can match what you put into an IRA or something. so that is a huge deal (and by the time your children are old enough to go to d. school you'll be worrying about retirement funds). dental school costs are probably ~200k depending on whether you go to a public/private/instate/out of state. 200k is pretty significant if the average dentist makes around ~175k/year.
from what i remember from when i interviewed when they gave us these statistics over 90% students are paying for their education via loans. i imagine more people have loans at private schools since they are generall more expensive. is your dad crazy? who knows, but if he pays for your dental school you'll be one step ahead of the game.

on another note that has been beaten to death on these forums, i'm not going to lie, dentists make pretty damn good money, especially when you compare it to their work schedules, however if you're going into dentistry to become rich, then you better be damn good at what you do so you can run a high profile practice (crown preps all day long seeing lots of patients, etc)

to the OP if you are a US citizen then you automatically qualify for stafford loans to around 40 some thousand. if your education costs more than that (say you go to a private school or you are out of state) you need to get the rest from private loans which generally have higher interest rates.

sorry if any of my info is wrong or my post jumbled but i'm drinking instead of
studying for my gross anatomy test on friday 👍

1. Loan
2. Military Scholarship

No, your dad isn't crazy. However, by the time we enter dental school we're all over 20 years old, and most of us have college degrees. A lot of parents hold the opinion that we're old enough to start taking care of ourselves at that point, and a lot of *us* think we're old enough to start taking care of ourselves.

Exactly.

I have classmates whose parents are cardiologists, CEO's, and on and on and, for whatever reason, they are having to take out loans like everyone else. Are there some students that are paying for school out of their pocket, sure, but they are in the minority. The national average of dental students receiving financial aid is 85%.

I agree with you completely. By the time most people get their first degrees, they've learnt the value of INDEPENDENCE.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, i probably sound juvenile .. but i've been working with my parents on like, trying to gain some independence. they still treat me like i'm 12 years old. sometimes it's ok, but it's really not.

Hey, I'm sorry if I sounded judgemental/condescending. 😳 I know how hard it can be to convince parents about stuff they've got their minds set on. I apologize. If they're intent on paying, hey go ahead and enjoy not having to worry about paying back loans. 🙂

My opinion on this matter.......

I'm a mother of 2 boys and let me tell you guys that I'd do all I can to pay for my boys education. It's a gift that if one is able to do it, then why not? It depends on a lot of things for each family.

My gut, my heart and my culture will make me pay for ALL their education. I will make them appreciate it & they will have to work to pay for some stuff like cell phone, clothes, going out....small things.

I hope they don't want to become Drs or Dentists

I think I have a Meteorologist and a Judge at home right now 😉

In my culture you take care of your children, and then they will take care of you when you are old. I'm dying to take care of my parents any way I can. In my culture you don't pray that your children move out of the house at 18 😱 You want them to stay with you until they get married.

I see a lot of Seniors alone here in Florida. It's really weird to me to see such a thing.

But the American culture is this way & I don't judge it at all, but won't lie and say that I like it. I have friends starting a career and family with huge student loans when parents could have helped them out when they were studying. Some children need to learn the hard way, some others don't. Some appreciate that you pay the whole cost of attendance--some other don't care and get kick out of school for not studying 😡

I rather have less at retirement, but have my children free of loans. Life is too short and we could be working hard to save $4 million for retirement and die at 50....

This is not to say that I look down at wealthy parents that don't pay for their children's education. It's my 2 cents and I have another culture, and different family values.

I hope God gives me a lot of health to work for my boys. After all, what else could be more fun paying for?

My thinking does NOT make me a "better" parent for thinking this way, OK? Being a parent will be the hardest thing you will ever do 🙂

Do you mind if I ask where you're from? If not, Where are you from? 🙂

Romanian? :wow: Beautiful country and people 🙂

That would be nice to graduate from dental school without debt. Although buying a practice would put you right in debt, so I guess this debt thing is inevitable. I have to say I did get a nice suprize when my old man gave me $25,000 which totally shocked me because ever since I remember I have been paying for everything, even many of my birthday presents I have had to earn. maybe a little too much information, but ga ahead and take what you can get and be thankful for it as long as long as you still know the value of the dollar and how to work for it I think you're ok

Well, said.
I too had to work hard to earn things from my parents. I'm doing the same thing with my kids 🙂
