i'm doing primaries and stumbled upon a long forgotten issue from the past.

my first quarter at junior college i gave test answers to my friend thus got caught cheating. i got F for an exam, but passed the class.

since i was high school student at that time, it didnt go into public record, but into a private college record - so just in case it happens again it would become public. it never happened again, i transfered to univ and got my bachelors with great gpa and no cheating.

... should i mention it in primaries or not...?

First off.... CHEATER!

Second... did the institution seek action against you? Yeah you got an F... but did you have an appeals process and that jazz... if not you're ok. But by the sounds of it... you did.

Better wait for NickNaylor and LizzyM... they're more experienced in dealing with CHEATERS.. than I am.

Did your professor fail you - or was this penalty handed down by the dean/student conduct committee? If the former, then there is no IA.

the case went to the dean, there was documentation-they took the pencils, scantron and scratch paper.
when i talked to the dean he said the professor will be the one to make a decision about punishment, so the prof gave me an F for an exam so i can learn and NEVER do it in future

is it a good idea to visit the college and check if the private record is still there and who has access to it?

the thing with situations like this is that you can lie and it is very likely no one would ever find out. but if someone did, you can be kicked out of med school; you'll be stuck with upwards of 3 years' worth of med school debt with absolutely no chance of ever paying it off.

No need to visit the school. You need to disclose & explain what happened. You were in HS so explain that you have grown up and I don't think this will be a big deal. lying about it will be if you get caught.

I don't think incidents that occurred when you were under the age of 18 are what they are looking for on the med school app, even if it did happen at a junior college (whatever that is). You were a minor.

If you think i'm going to disclose my underage at age 17, your crazy.

do you generally report even if you were under 18?

You must report INSTITUTIONAL ACTION even if it occurred when you were a minor.

That said, and I have been a faculty member in a situation like this...

schools have a procedure for dealing with academic dishonesty. It is a cumbersome procedure and requires a gathering of senior faculty, offical communications by certified letter, an appeals process, etc, etc. It is a major pain. Some deans will decide to offer you the academic equivalent of a plea bargain.... you agree to accept whatever punishment the faculty member gives you and you agree to forego your right to a hearing, appeal, etc. In return, the INSTITUTION does not take an official ACTION. All the "action" is by the faculty member. It is almost like the legal situation where you take a plea bargain with a lesser punishment rather than standing trial where the punishment will be more harsh if you are found guilty.

It is my opinion that you were not the recipient of an institutional action and you can respond "no" with a clear conscious.
