hoping for some great ideas for my husband, who's finishing his gen surg residency in June. will be going on to a CT fellowship, so any really good books (CT or just good doctor-themed reads- has read House of God & Complications), or any other ideas, would be very much appreciated!

of course, money is still an issue... cars, plasma tvs, etc. not an option for me, just want something thoughtful and/or useful... 🙂

Bojar's "Perioperative Care in Adult Cardiac Surgery" is a good text. The preferred text will likely vary for program to program. First or Early editions of text books are difficult to find but may offer an interesting historical perspective (if your husband appriates that sort of stuff). Journal subscription may also be useful. Fellowships are often more work than residency and long weekend together before he starts may be the best gift.

I agree with the above post that as the spouse of a CT Surgery fellow, you will feel even more the surgery widow, so perhaps a weekend away with you would be most enjoyable and valuable to both of you.

At this point he's probably got all the books and tools he will need thus I would treat this like any other special event and gift it accordingly. Perhaps tickets to a major league sporting event he enjoys; if he's metrosexual, a day at the spa together, complete with massages is sort of fun (but obviously you have to have the right guy to enjoy it); rent a car and take a night away at a nearby fancy hotel and dinner.

The above require *time* which is in short supply, but if you can swing it before he starts fellowship I'll bet he'd enjoy it much more than a textbook.
