Now that the cycle is basicly over and most of us have been accepted, will any of you be gifting the professors who wrote you LoRs?

I am having trouble about whether or not I should. There is this one professor I am really close with and would like to get him a book, but i'm not sure if this would be awkward or appropriate. Would this "cheapen" the relationship?

What do you think sdn?

I personally did not gift the professors until I was actually accepted into one. I didn't want to appreciate them and realize that I would have to ask them for LOR again... that would look awkward. I think it's generally okay to gift them AFTER everything has been decided.

Thanking a professor for a favor, be it with a handshake, apple, book, etc. is in no way inappropriate. If you're close with the professor and want to thank him, go for it. Giving them treats before they write you a letter, now that's a different story.

I don't think it's terrible. My orgo professor wrote me a letter that he said was "one of the strongest he had ever written". . .so I thought it might be nice to get him a UMSoD mug with a handwritten letter of my appreciation, as a sort of reminder of what his effort and consideration resulted in. He doesn't have to use it, but he could keep it in his office and remember that at least one of his students appreciated his work.

👍 A mug from the school you're accepted at actually sounds like a perfect idea! I was struggling trying to think of a more unique gift than a restaurant gift card...

Thank you cards. Hand-written. 👍

I gave them hand written thank you card and a gift card. But I have given it not only to professors who wrote me letters but also for those who were awesome instructors.
