I would like some opinions on my current situation. I am finishing my first semester of college, unfortunately I went into college for general studies not knowing what I wanted to do and flaked out. I just woken up and realized I love medicine and want to have a career in it. I know pre-med is very competitive and was wondering with a first semester gpa of about 2.6, including an F in a math class basically ruined any chance of me getting medical school?

No. A strong upward trend in the future will show that you gained perspective and maturity from your failures early on. Freshman year allows you plenty of time to make up for mistakes. I have an F on my record from the semester where my mother passed away and I got accepted this cycle, and I know several other people in medical school that overcame early setbacks and got in. It'll even give you something to write about when you have to write about a challenge you overcame!

This is only your first semester, with a few A's and fixing that Math grade and you will be in the 3.00s in no time. Too early to quit.

Here's what could happen to your GPA if you take 15 hours a semester and get all A's the rest of the way.

Freshman year:
Fall: 2.6
Spring: 3.32
Sophomore year:
Fall:3.55
Spring:3.67
Junior year:
Fall:3.74
Spring: 3.78
Senior year:
Fall: 3.81
Spring: 3.84

Now lets say instead of getting all A's, you get one B each semester and the rest all A's from here on out....your GPA would be 3.66

Add a couple more B's and you'll have a 3.61

Just google "GPA calculator" and mess with it a little bit. You should be fine, and no, do NOT give up!

You sound like me my freshman year. I failed out way worse and it was community college. I will be applying next cycle and I almost have a 3.4 and I am currently studying for the MCAT and will take it Jan 29th. Just remember if you want to do medicine you can do it just put in the work and retake your errors. Do better this time.....

Thank you guys for your advice, I am now happy that I have hope lol and just going hit the books hard for the next 4 years 🙂

My freshman GPA was 1.6. Yeah, that's right. Everyone said I'd never make it. I told 'em all to suck it. And now I'm mid-way through med school and doing well. The key is to get that GPA up as high as possible. Med schools will forgive the F but you'll only be considered if you make it through the screens. That means pulling a few years of 4.0's and getting up in the mid 3' range. It's totally possible. It'll suck, but it's possible if you want it bad enough.

Too bad they don't make christmas card with people performing fellatio cause that would be perfect for all those doubters. I had my fair share of em including my premed advisor ... too bad she quit shortly thereafter otherwise I might be tempted of making my own card and sending it to her. 👍

I had a 2.9 GPA after 1st semester and am now accepted into a good MD school. You even have the upper hand on me because I didn't wake up until after my second semester so I had two bad-to-mediocre semester GPA's.

No, I promise you can recover from this. Don't get down on yourself even if you hit a few more speed bumps along the way. Just keep working hard.

It's way too early to give up. You can do it easily. Even a 3.2 can get you in somewhere if you own the MCAT. Obviously aim higher, but you see my point. You'll be fine 🙂

Don't be a quitter. Quitters are pathetic. Start working your ass off.
