I just got a retail internship a few weeks ago, and I'm generally happy with it, but looking long-term, I would also want to try and attain a hospital internship. Assuming its not feasible to work as both a retail and hospital intern at the same time (due to time constraints), AND assuming a hospital position actually opens up, how would one make the switch? More specifically, would it be possible to retain a positive relationship with my current (retail) employer, or would that bridge be 'burned'?

Depending on who is your retail employer. If your retail employer is one that you do not see working for in the future, then I would go ahead and take the hospital internship because the barrier for entry into retail is easier than hospital. If it is the opposite, then I would reconsider and phrase my words very carefully if I do decide to write the resignation letter for the retail pharmacy. In any case, I do not think you will get "blacklisted" just because of resigning like that.

Just my opinion.

Give your polite resignation and at least 2 weeks notice is enough. Don't burn any bridge or give a bad exit interview. Venting might feel good but gains you nothing.

Anyway, it's quite feasible to hold both a retail and hospital internship. I did it for most of the pharmacy school. And quite frankly, I would encourage people to do so if they can. Keep your options open, diversify your skill sets, and pad your resumes. If you have to play a game, then try to play it well.

Did you get an offer from your retail position when you graduated? I'm assuming the retail pharmacy knew you had a hospital internship.

Both knew i worked in the other setting, but they don't care. They are not in anyway competing with each other.

After 3 years there, I knew retail wasn't for me, but kept it along as long as I could as a safety net. But when they wanted a commitment at the fall of p4 year, I told them i was going for residency so as to avoiding any potential perception of slight. I was expecting them to lay me off then like some of the other interns, but they kept me on until the end.

I tried to do both but the retail internship wasn't so keen on me having two internships. I decided to go with a hospital internship instead 🙂
