I am interested in learning if there are programs for dentists from the US to go and practice in Australia or New Zealand for a limited time (6-12 months).

Background:
I am actually an emergency medicine physician. My wife is a currently practicing dentist and graduate from a US dental school. There are opportunities for me to go to Australia or New Zealand and work for periods of 6-12 months. My wife and I are interested in this, but I am concerned that she may not be able to work in Australia or New Zealand while we are there. I have reviewed the Australia and New Zealand dental councils websites and it seems that one would be required to take a qualifying exam and then a clinical exam before being able to practice in Australia. Does anyone know if there is any other way to get certified? Does anyone know of any agencies that would assist in accomplishing these license requirements and temporary job placement? Does anyone have any personal experience with this process?

I appreciate any feedback that you can give me on this issue.

I went to NZ this summer for 2 weeks - GORGEOUS!
anyway, I liked it so much I started asking around about moving there and practicing dentistry - from the people I talked to (nobody in the field, just people on the street etc.) they said that you need to be a citizen of NZ or Australia in order to be able to work in either country (or a Canadian or British citizen etc.).

I saw piece on the news when I was there about how NZ is losing all of its doctors to Australia - they'll get their degrees in NZ and then move to Australia to make more money, so you may have a better shot at getting her to practice in a clinic or hospital in NZ.

That's all I know about it.

Stick to an "Academic Position" at a dental school in New Zealand. I would contact a dental school there. Probably your best bet....

It really depends on what your looking at doing. I agree that you should contact the ADC as well as the local dental schools in the areas in which you would like to go.

From what I understand if you want to make money and work in the private sector you're going to have to sit the ADC exams (no way I know around this).

If however, you are content with teaching part-time at a dental school or they "may" (not sure) let you work in an area of need public clinic or something.

Again, contact the dental board, ADC, and dental school in the area in which you wish to go.

Good luck!

Btw: Some of the dental schools in Australia and New Zealand are currently applying to CODA for accreditation. (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide) With the view that maybe in a decade from now we will have a reciprical agreement with the US and Canada for dental licensure. 👍
