Does anyone know anything about this "Gold Standard" board prep series with like 50 cd's? Is it any good? I see all these people selling theirs. I had not seen it discussed on this forum so I was wondering if anyone knew anything aobut it.

Thanks

I have it, would not recommend it. First of all the format is pretty lame, it asks you questions (lots of which are on minutae) then has you pause and tells you the answers. Also, the lectures are given in a flat boring monotone that puts me to sleep. Get your hands on the Kaplan videos instead.

Heh, I think I'd prefer to stick to the Goljan audio. I've seen the Kaplan videos as well and.... I can't really say that they did it for me either, heh.

A complete waste of time and $$$.

Goljan's audios are very good, but unfortunately only cover pathology and whatever integrations he could work in. I think that some of the Kaplan live prep lectures are almost up to par with Goljan. Steven Daugherty's deadpan humor in his behavioral science lectures are awesome, and for the pharm lectures Anthony Trevor did write Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology. The rest aren't as good, but helpful nonetheless and much better than the gold standard lectures. Don't overlook the Kaplan Live Prep lectures, they are a valuable resource.

Do you primarily recommend just the pharmacology and behavioral science video lectures from Kaplan? Are there any other particularly standout lectures in the Kaplan series?

I think those two subjects are particularly good, but I would recommend all of the videos if you have the time. The lectures present information in a way that just works well for the boards.

Hey Pinkertinkle,

Do you by any chance remember the people who did the other kaplan lecture videos aside from Pharm and Behavioral? I hear that they switched the videos recently so im not sure who is good to listen too. Who did you listen to for physiology, micro, and anatomy?

Thanks so much!

I don't remember them all but it was Barrone for path, Dunn for physio, that's all I can recall. It was from 2000 I believe, and every bit as relevant today as it was back then.

Oh I see. Did you listen to them with your classes? I had physio last year and am wondering if I should review physio now as i go through pathophys. Dunn seems a bit annoying though. Did you find his lectures helpful?

I listened to the pharm, path and physio during my second year classes because they correlated well to what we learned about each organ system. The rest I did when I was doing my real reviewing. Dunn has a nasally voice and talks too slow, but if you speed him up on windows media player he's rather tolerable especially since what he teaches is high yield.

Thanks so much! Do you think its still worth listening to the path one even though I'm listening to Goljan and following his RR book? Would that be overkill?

I did because he had pictures that he could point out features of which I didn't get from Goljan since we only have access to the audio and a couple of slides. It is probably more than necessary though, so don't feel obligated unless you like Barrone's ever greasier hair and cheesy smile.

haha, ok thanks! i assume you watched the videos and annotated the kaplan books as you went along right? did you annotate FA at the same time with the info from the lecture books/audio?

I thought the newest Goljan RR path book had lots of pictures in it.
