I read through his posts, and he wasn't doing anybody any harm.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=174973

In fact, he was helping students review pathology. I didn't even get a chance to ask him a question about the BUN/CREATINE RATIO in post renal azotemia.

His authencity even fooled one of his best students (Idiopathic) at OSU. If he starts trolling we will report him. I think the ENDS justify the MEANS. I think we should petition to bring him back. Here is a poll. Would you like to see the Fake Goljan brought back.

Gee, I wonder whose IP matched the fake account? 🙄

The result of the poll is what matters. The ENDS justify the MEANS. My roommate just wants to help SDN students review pathology. What is wrong with a little showmanship? There is nothing wrong with trying to help. Let the SDNers decide if they want a fake Goljan with Pathology knowledge.

Consider this fact. Idiopathic (one of sharpest students on SDN) asked a random question in Pathology to "Goljan" and he answered at a drop of a hat. Just imagine how much he could help the other SDNers.

I second, or rather third this motion... bring him back... the poster never really purported to be anyone other than Edward J Goljan, SDN pathology geek. Besides, I see "Robbins" posting on here all the time. Let academic discourse resume. 👍

Reread Idiopathic’s post, he said “Seeing as how I know the man, I actually almost believe him.” I'm sure he noticed as I did, that your use of "Goljan"isms were semi-correct; however, you lose points for failing to use the terms, "High yield" and "little dudes". Discuss all you want, but don't use Goljan's name. The impersonation noted in this thread and specifcially in this post, this post, and this post is disrespectful and helps no one.

now if you have a question about post-renal azotemia ask it without the pretense, but now that I think about it, that's ******ed since it was your "roommate" posing as Goljan, ask him.........

Looks like both representatives from Oklahoma State have made their case. Now, notice how the rest of the country have voted. We had no intention to harm anyone. The "J" part should have clued you in that it was a parody. You even conceded the Goljanisms were semi-correct. You can't take both sides of the same argument. Also, the posts you presented supports the pro-Goljan camp since it questions illegitimate access to his material.

Going back to the main point. The thread was a vehicle for pathology discussion. There is nothing wrong with a little showmanship to facilitate discourse. He knows his stuff. Let him continue. How many other people on SDN have volunteered their time to answer questions in Pathology with a proven mastery of the material?

I don't care what anyone else thinks, parody or not, it's wrong. Goljan may very well be the best instructor I've ever had, and his material and books popularity among students backs that up. And having someone who doesn't not have Goljan's experience dispensing "pearls" for boards is disingenuous.

and who are these 9 idiots who wish to listen to you dubious advice? Whoever you are, how can you know what his advice is worth and if his answers are correct? Are you going to look them up? Then what's the point? go read the notes yourself. And why would you listen and take any of the "pearls" he gives out as being worth anything? We have no clue who this imposter is……..

how am I taking both sides? I note that you "friend" has obviously been in a Goljan review course or pirated them somehow, but I don’t ever give the impression that I like what you’re trying to do. I don't find what borders on the edge of identify theft very funny. I highly respect the real Goljan, and no one could ever do what he does.

and this statement is trying to say what? That I respect the man? That I believe that the illegal distribution of copyrighted material is illegal? That I think you’re being an ass for trolling?

knowing SiADH hardly shows a mastery of pathology. If you or your “roommate” wish to give advice, list credentials.......

God forbid people actually use this messageboard to ask board questions and have them answered. I guess it's back to reading the dozens of teenage-angst/ hand-holding threads.

who's saying you can't ask questions? I'm saying the way it was done is in the thread cited was inappropriate and disingenuous.......

1)Ill probably get in a little trouble for this:But I find the difference between the two sexes is that with a woman "EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING IS A BIG DEAL"

2)Concerning the name Goljan-I think some were too cynical.

3)He didnt hurt anyone, I thought he was helpful, Im sure someone would jump right on him if he did make a mistake!!!

4)Some learn best either with constant repitition or in unique learning situations.-I thought this situation was unique!

You all are silly. Poppy would agree, were he consulted. Whatever helps people get one extra point on an exam as important as USMLE/COMLEX is worth it, IMHO. While I got Goljan's material fair and square, I can understand how someone desperate to do well on the test could appropriate it otherwise. As far as dispensing info, harmless fun. Like I said, it almost had me fooled.

And we all know that serum sodium of 119 could be at least 5 other things before siADH was even considered. I saw it three times this week, none of which were attributable to siADH...I was just looking to see what the answer would be 😉

I think it is fine to post as "fake-Goljan" assuming everyone KNOWS it is a parody.

The way the original posting were done, it was less than clear. I wouldn't want some random people posting under my name if I was a neat-o path wizard.

The thing is though he said he was J Goljan not the F Goljan. There is also this other guy posting as Dr. Troy but I don't believe he is the Dr. Troy from Nip and Tuck. And I'm not really Long Duc Dong from sixteen candles either.

Just to clear things up: users may not register for multiple screennames & users may not use a screenname to impersonate someone else. This was essentially trolling. All of these things are TOS violations.

Just to clear things up even better: Just because one has the same IP address as someone else doesn't mean one person has multiple screenames. Roommates in a fraternity house have over 40 people and have the same IP address, and students that attend the same school may use the same computer in the library. A separate email is required to start up a SDN account. Secondly, there are many people on SDN that use popular names such as Robbins and John Barone (Have they been banned?). Both of these things that you mentioned are ancilliary. Frankly, you didn't ban him to highlight those two rules, you used those two rules as an excuse to ban him. What really is eating you up is that we were doing a parody of someone at OSU. If you look at the poll results it is very one sided, essentially, how students from OSU voted vs the how the rest of the country have voted. Makes you wonder if we would have been "singled out" if it was anyone other than Dr. G.

The point is this. Every person alive has bias based on life experience. Isn't is possible you might be a little too harsh because you are from OSU? In a court of law, the verdict is decided by our peers that determine the outcome, and jury selections are very meticulous to curb bias. The students on SDN have read the evidence on both sides and have come to the conclusion to bring the fake Goljan back by a LARGE MARGIN. He feels bad about this whole thing, and he told me to apologize for him in his behalf. Let the punishment fit the crime. A good compromise is if you ban his screename and reinstate his email address so he can come back with a new screen name. It was all in good fun.

Let's keep in mind the underlying motive, it was to facilitate conversation about Pathology concepts highlighted by Dr. G. Everyone here knows that the parody was not meant to disparage Dr. G. So, what is wrong with that? The ENDS justify the MEANS.

.

I'm not from OSU, wouldn't know Goljan if I saw him and voted no in the poll, BUT I agree with this part of the above post - I mean the guy was just making a joke - you don't ban everybody who trolls.

I personally wouldn't care if someone had a screenname based on my name - but I would mind if they were going around saying they were me - I think that is the difference b/t the other examples listed above

Exactly, I don't mind the usage of the Goljan-isms or the screen name, I do take offence to the insinuations that it was Goljan posting.......

I think people are just making a mountain out of a mole hill here. I understand that it is wrong to use someone else's identity, but we all agree here that no harm was done. I think a few people are being really anal about this, or it touched some nerves for reasons I'm not understanding. The guy made a mistake, and I think he learned his lesson.
I think fake goljan should be brought back, since everyone knows he's fake now and leave it up to individuals to read his posts and take his help or not.

I agree. A pearl is a pearl. Just because it comes from a pseudo-Goljan doesn't make it any less valid. Besides, this forum is full of really bright people who know their pathology, if fake Dr. G started disseminated crap info, someone would the dude on it before too long. 😉

Well, doc troy and Long Duc Dong are fictional, so they just don't matter.

And, honestly, I had no idea what Goljan's first and middle initials were. I wasn't naive enough to think someone on SDN with a screenname of Goljan was actually the man, but I understand how someone could be confused.

But yeah, mountain out of an ant-pile... mole hills are bigger than this.

That is exactly my point is J. Goljan is fictional he never said he was F. Goljan. There was a G.W. Bush who used to post on here and a John McCain but nobody thought they were the real deal, and if they did I have a bridge in brooklyn I would like to sell them.

Well this all kind comes down to reasonable person standard of things.

I only knew Goljan by his last name, so really, G Goljan, J Goljan, Q Goljan all sound about the same to me. I have a feeling, since he is always refered to as simply "Goljan" not George W Goljan, etc, that it is reasonable to conclude a lot of medical students know him only by his surname.

Secondly, what reasonable person would think that our president is going to post on a USMLE step 1 board? No one.

What reasonable person would think a well known doctor who teaches pathology board review would post on a USMLE board offering similar pearls of wisdom as his well known pirated audio lectures, books, etc.? I think a few people could be tricked.

Anyway, my real point is that if they want to offer pearls of wisdom in Goljan's style, thats awesome. Its really cool to help out other people like that. But they need to make a strong effort to display they are simply impersonating Dr. Goljan to make it more interesting or colorful. An actual text disclaimer would be appropriate, I think. No reason to be overly ambiguous about it.

Oh so it was your roommate, then was it? 😉

BTW, have you written any memoirs lately? 🙄

Oh, I just noticed this is an old thread...

Pox, you sure do dig up nice stuff from the SDN past. What else went on around here? hahahahaha... This was a hilarious thread!

Realize that if Goljan's name pops up, the OSU-COM students get really defensive and the thread is usually killed.
