Hey everyone, there is a lot of advice on this forum regarding away rotations and specifically the need for experience with an attending (vs. resident shadowing). Does anyone know any good away clerkships that enable you to be primarily with an attending and thus give you the best opportunity to get LORs?

If you want a LOR, you should do a preceptorship, not the regular ophtho rotation. You can get a LOR from a regular rotation, but you may not spend enough time with any one faculty to write you a meaningful LOR. A preceptorship, however, puts you with one faculty for the entire time.

Call programs where you are interested in working and ask about finding faculty that would be willing to be your preceptor.

your best bet is to get a good LOR from your home program. They are more likely to know you well and for a longer period of time. It is difficult for an attending on an away rotation to write you a meaningful and strong LOR if they have only worked with you for a month.
