So I'm starting dental school in August and during my time off I want to read a book or two about running my own business since I know very little about this. Does anyone have any suggestions on books that are good for teaching you how to run a dental practice or a business in general? Thanks.

Look through the thread "Let's buy a Dental practice". It's in the Dental forum and contains several books which Hammer and other students/dentists recommend.

Best book I have read in a while: gives you an inside, in-depth view about marketing... Do-It-Yourself Marketing for the Professional Practice. Look on Amazon.

Two steps:

1. Go to dentaltown - while I owe my entrance to dental school to SDN, dentaltown has so many more practicing dentists, consultants, and amazing articles -especially regarding the business of dentistry.

2. Listen to Gary Takacs' podcast, The Thriving Dentist Show on iTunes. Fantastic content and interviews.

3. If you want one book suggestion, check out 'Everything is Marketing' by Fred Joyal. He's the founder of 1-800-Dentist and his book is great.

I have been in sales and small business management the past 5 years and although not particular to dentistry, the principles in these books are universal, and would help any business thrive.

In the order i would recommend:

The E-Myth Revisited
Good to Great
The Little Red Book of Selling
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
