what books would you guys propose I should read before the interview. I'm a strict mystery fiction-reader, so I haven't read anything outside that genre. I think its time, lol.

Anything that'll be good to know for the interview.. doesn't have to be just healthcare related.

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, so much is up-in-the-air right now, many of the "books" will not have the most recent and pertinent information. Yes, if you have the time to go in-depth into the history of healthcare within the US, I would say start with published books. However, for interview prep, you are much better served to read more articles and current position papers from major organizations involved. For example, the new proposed ACO rulings just came out last week (or the week before time is sliding away from me!) Thursday.

Good luck

+1 for The Healing of America. I read it for fun and was able to talk about it in a couple of my interviews.

I was actually planning on reading that book soon, thumbs up.*

Understanding Health Care Policy is a good book.

It won't be up on the issues of the last year or two, but it's good to learn about the health care system in general.

Great! Our library has it!! Thanks! (by Bodenheimer, right?)

Yes.

By the way, of the 4+ hours of reading this stuff, it only helped in maybe 1 or 2 out of 7 interviews and even then, only for a few minutes of an hour.

But good to educate yourself anyhow.

"The Healing of America" by T.R. Reid presents a good overview of the health care issues facing us and presents it in the context of the health care systems of other countries.

That is a good book, the author gave a pretty good interview on Charlie Rose. There are also a few other books about how insurance companies and plans function.

I thought "Health Care Reform and American Politics" was a good skim too. TNR also has some good coverage of the political climate surrounding reform.

hi vickpick :hello:

I didn't read any books, but I DID print the following articles off of Wikipedia and read them thoroughly:
Medicare
Healthcare in America
Medical Ethics

When my interviews were over, I was soooo thankful I had this preparation!

Good luck!

These are some of the required readings for MS1 students. They should give you a good start. There are more but I was too lazy to post all of them.

Since these are journal articles, I think I'll be able to access them for free from school. I'll check them out, thanks!

Thanks so much! I have them bookmarked and will print them out as well, when I get a chance. The amount of knowledge on Wikipedia still amazes me!

LOL, shouldn't you know about this stuff before you even consider medicine as a career?

For websites, I would highly recommend Ezra Klein's blog at the Washington Post. He's on the left politically, but is an honest broker and argues in good faith with regards to the health care debate. His best stuff was during the deliberations leading up to the ACA vote, so you might have to travel back in time a bit, but it's good stuff. The comments on health care-related posts are good as well.

I'm ready; which is why I've got my shotgun training down to take down DNPs/PAs that encroach on my territory and a mindless drone to do all my paperwork for me. Who's winning? I'M WINNING!

This list is GREAT! Thanks for sharing with your public 😀

Check out the Health Care Blog for good, up to date, info about current health policy from reporters, bloggers, and doctors, alike. Good stuff about the new changes, ACOs, etc.

The NOVA documentaries Sick Around America and Sick Around the World are pretty good.
