I was raised by an immigrant in a predominantly white community -- all my classmates, friends, neighbors, teachers, etc. were white. With my other parent often absent due to work, I didn't have the guidance that others my age undoubtedly took for granted, so I frequently met with challenges I would be unequipped to handle. I recall attending various sports camps as the only one without the proper equipment or knowledge of the rules and attending college without understanding the importance of doing well for the sake of graduate school and employment. I emerged resourceful, learned to adapt while under duress, and gained an understanding of the struggle to adapt to a foreign culture. In addition, I believe I can more easily understand the perspective of others who first encounter an unfamiliar situation, such as a patient in their first experience at a healthcare setting.

What do you guys think? Otherwise, I could write about being multi-racial, but I think that'd be less interesting.

Its good, but you should re-write it a bit. Address the prompt: Diversity. What makes you diverse? Don't start like I'm about to: "I'm diverse because I was raised a bit differently compared to all of my peers growing up, having immigrant parents. My diversity is more in my identity; in one sense, I am <insert ethnicity> however, I am also <don't say white, but find a better way to describe your dominant race/classmates>" Discuss how you are diverse, and moreover, what this diversity taught you about life, and how you can add that to a school of medicine.

I agree with Dr. Stalker. Also, I think writing about how you're multiracial is a really great topic - not everyone has had the experience of being multiracial or living a life consisting of multiple different cultures. 🙂
