I'm leaving the first lab that took me in as an undergrad, and I wanted to give my mentor/PI and the post-doc who trained me a small token of my appreciation. I was thinking a gift certificate to a book store or something, but I feel it might be weird since it's got the value right on the front. Any good ideas? P.S. I'm poor, so nothing over $20 a piece.

I've been leaning toward edible gifts recently. Usually not too expensive and you can show you care by putting a lot of thought into it. Do you know your PI well enough to pick out something s/he'd like? The key is to add a nice well written card. Definitely won't cost $20 total.

Cheap, grocery store wine always does the truck for post-grads....remember that they are still poor too. 🙂

I would also say food is a good choice. There was a huge commotion yesterday in my lab because someone brought in cookies and passed them out 🙂

I think a gift certificate to a bookstore for $15 is a great idea, that's about the price of one book. With the gift certificate they can pick what they want, they know that you are poor, and really it is the thought that counts.

A package of Starbucks or another good brand of coffee.

If you work in a biological lab that researches viruses or bacteria, you may want to consider getting a Giant Microbe plush toy. They've got every disease you could want.

I got double helix cuff links for my PI. He seemed to like them, but he could have been faking.

P.I. - Picture of you and P.I in a nice frame for P.I.'s office.
Postdoc - Booze*

*If said postdoc does not drink, you have not been trained properly and postdoc deserves nothing.

I don't make it a habit to take random pictures well centrifuging, so that's a no go. And I'm also not attracted to him, so that's definitely no good.
