Alexi Murdoch-haunting melodies and a unique singing voice
Collective Soul-their first 4 CDs or their CD that is live with the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra
Big Audio Dynamite-featuring Mick Jones of the Clash; unique and innovative music and sampling
The Cure-timeless band
Dave Matthews Band-Complete Weekend On The Rocks 8 disc set-available on their website-worth the money
Jane's Addiction-Up From The Catacombs
Pearl Jam-Rearview Mirror-good retrospective of their best years
Tonic-Lemon Parade-solid album
U2-Live From Paris (1987) off of iTunes-when they were at their best
Van Halen-Fair Warning and Women and Children First-no keyboards or remake songs here, just hard rocking songs.

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

New band, very trippy rock that merges genres.....give it a shot

Explosions In The Sky - instrumental "post rock" with hella long songs to shorten those drives
The Mars Volta - prog/metal with a Hispanic slant
Mogwai - instrumental "post rock" again, shorter and catchier songs
Tool - 'nuff said.

Just a few, spanning many genres, that always gets airtime on my adventures:
Citizen Cope
Gomez
People Under the Stairs
Sage Francis
Aesop Rock
Grateful Dead - Any live show from May of 1977

Safe travels! 🙂

can you describe each?

Sorry, in a rush earlier and just wanted to drop some suggestions.
What I suggest is;
1) hitting up www.allmusic.com and type in each artist for a wealth of info on their genres, backgrounds and discographies.
2) then plug in to www.pandora.com and make channels for each of the bands in the thread to see which work for you.

Citizen Cope and Gomez are ~ similar, probably best described as rock, though with heartfelt, folky blends from very novel and distinctive singers. Ever see "High Fidelity" when Cuzak puts on The Beta Band? Kind of similar to them. Think more mainstream Widespread Panic, String Cheese, etc. They could be jam bands, but do not fall into the repetition of jam-banding.

P.U.T.S., Sage Francis and Aesop Rock are all within the genre of hip-hop, though not mainstream, whatsoever. P.U.T.S. are a duo out of L.A., with the most incredible, optimistic, groovy, non-violent, intelligent hip-hop that I've come across in a looong time. They use sampling of old jazz, big-band, swing, blues, pop in a way that is addicting (think Digable planets, Tribe Called Quest, Beasties, etc). Sage is a rapping, spoken word, live show-battle champ who can fill any of his songs with so much depth in his raps that it's hard to keep up with. He's a bit more aggressive, but not gangsta by ANY means. Just tells it like it is. Aesop is also within intelligent hip-hop, though much more dark and brooding. Like Tool is to rock, Aesop Rock is to hip-hop. Deep, thick and chunky grooves with sometimes disturbing lyrics in a package that can be wrapped in a burrito of dance-able grooves. Amazing. Ever hear of Massive Attack or Portishead? He's their solo hip-hop artist analogy.
All three of these above are true, gifted poets along the lines of Michael Franti of Spearhead, Tuna from Jurassic 5, Atmosphere, etc.

And the Dead's run in May of '77 is some of their best. Just sick. They were so on, especially in the early month (5/6, 5/7, 5/8).

couple of good driving albums..

Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" - quirky rock. not a huge Lips fan but something about this album makes it work on many levels. Good driving disc as well.

K-OS - "Atlantis: Hymns for Disco" - indie hip-hop/rock/dance from Canada. This guy is slept on and it's a shame. The album is 100% gold.

Stars "Set Yourself on Fire" - indie baroque pop with electronic influence. very catchy and poppy story-sketch lyrics that holds up to repeated listening.

Wolf Parade "Apologies to The Queen Mary" - angular spastic indie rock, ala modest mouse, with enough originality to keep the disc fresh.

Some old Tribe Called Quest - "Low End Theory" or "Midnight Marauders" - just because it works as background beats for happy driving.

Brazilian Girls - "New York City" - only because my uh, lady friend, likes them and she's much smarter than I am, so there must be something to them. Eclectic, electric postmodern pop with variety.

as much as I adore explosions in the sky, I recommend them for bathtub, not car!!!

I can listen to it if I am in danger of speeding, it will slow me down 😉

Fine then.

Queens of the Stone Age - "Songs for the Deaf." It's very loosely a concept album about driving from LA out to the Palm Desert, including fake snippets from radio shows as the driver flips around the dial. Rockin' stuff. Dave Grohl will pound your brains in with those drums.

hey I accept all sugestions 😀 and I check them all out in me FREE time hehe

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Interesting style, didn't mind watching their videos. Not normally what I would jump on.

Here is what I would suggest. Anything with beat always works. Mix it up with some classic rock. Here are some samples.

Keane

Shinedown

INXS

Metric: Live It Out
Radiohead: OK Computer
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Show Your Bones
French Kicks: Trial of the Century
Goldfrapp: Seventh Tree

mmm mmm mmm

Some artists mentioned above too

Keane: Dude is one of the best vocalists out there. Its sort of alternative vocally stuff that just makes good listening music.

The Shins' "wincing the night away." Again, alt rock but this stuff is great. Its chill mainly but it just grabs ya. Not fast, not poppy, just solid.

Fleet Foxes. How My Morning Jacket used to sound. Folky alt stuff with some of the catchiest little riffs I've heard in a while.

Snow Patrol. Just listen to their new alblum. Catchy poppy rock. A bit mushy at times but it does the job nicely.

Spoon's "gimmie fiction" alblum. Austin Texas' throws down some soulful rock.

Sufjan Stevens. Check out any of his stuff. Its folky but its phenomenal.

Talib Kwalie and Mos Def's "black starr" alblum. ITs from 1998 but it still slams. Its hip-hop, not rap. Check it.

Tosca. Its loungy electronica at its finest. These dudes basically invented this style and they are the best at it. Oh yeah, they are German's too so you know they gotta be cool.

Trentemoller's "the last resort". Also some of the best electronica out there. Its not trance, techno, house, raver $h1t. Its electronica.

Jan Jelinek. Again, one of the best electronica guys out there. I think this dude is from Germany too. What is it with these guys?

Interpol. Sorry man, but these guys nail alternative rock. NAIL IT. Its grainy but refined. You will enjoy these dudes.

Basic Channel. Drone techno done right.

Bon Iver. Some of the most moving acoustic stuff I've heard. Dude locked himself in a cabin in wisconsin forest for a winter and cranked this thing out. Its unique and its the schnizzle.

Cypress Hill's "black sunday." With lyrics like: Some say life is a bitch/Ask that punk who dug his own ditch/Out for the Hill ****in up at a party
/Tried to get funny, put a hole in his body/Lala la la lala la laaa/Look at all of those funeral cars.........how could you ever go wrong?

Panda Bear. His newest one is like the beach boys after a bong rip or something. Its not for everyone but you may like it. His lyrics are solid.

Dangerdoom: Insane-o lyrics from a hip-hop master.

The Dead Texan: My second favorite chill out ambient guy. A must listen.

Stars of the lid: My favorite chill out ambient guy. A must listen.

That should get you started🙂

Vent apparently downloads directly from my iPod.

I'd like to add:

The Thrills: "Teenager". Indie with an influence from Ireland and the Beachwood Sparks. If that makes sense...

Editors: "The Back Room" or "An End Has a Start". If you like Interpol, you will like Editors. Or if you are me, and like Joy Division, yet aren't wowed by Interpol, you might still love Editors.

Kevin Drew: "Spirit If...". Great solo work from an indie/experimental rock member of...

Broken Social Scene: "You Forgot It In People". Instant indie classic from the first spin.

thats some really good chill out music, really good stuff. tried contacting you some more but dont know how and i dont think your active much on there forum VentDependent...newayz yeah if you got any other cool ambient, post some thx

if you have an Iphone with unlimited 3G...buy an iphone-to-car kit and crank up your PANDORA app.👍 www.pandora.com my favorite genre: alt/rock, alt/indie, bossa nova, blues, old school jazz, ambient, etc!! ....much better than any satellite radio, it'll learn what kind of music you like.

Don't apologize. Interpol rock. Not every single track, not every single show, they have their misses, but their hits are HITS.

Can't disagree w/ Spoon either

Gern's got some solid picks...

Spot on with Collective Soul, though, I'd say the first 5 albums are gravy. As for U2, if I could take one cd it would be the Best of 1980-1990.

I'd also add:
Live - Throwing Copper
Bush - Sixteen Stone

I'll toss in a few more

DMB - Live from Central Park, or Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds from Radio City

Jack Johnson - In between dreams and Brushfire Fairy Tales

2nd the Foo suggestion

I've been into Muse lately...(and yes, I first heard of them on Guitar Hero III).

I second the Pandora suggestion...I have station genres ranging from from Allison Krauss from old skool Dre/Snoop.

Vladislav Delay: Ambient fo' sho'

Labradford: Classic ambient

Check out Diakan by Thomas Kroner. This is about as minimal and as dark as it gets.

Biosphere: Classic ambient stuff. No new age crap. None of the ambient I listen to is.

Eluvium: This dude is seriously talented. Again, ambient.

Minimal Dub Techno people: Quantec, Deepchord, Murmur (check the mix on Resident Advisor).

The Field: Techno inspired modern electro. Thinking mans electro? Dunno. but its good.

HeartThrob: Dear painter, paint me. Get the continuous mix if you can. Solid minimal techno but a bit more upbeat. Same lable as Hawtin.

Loscil: Submers. You want minimal ambient dubby stuff? You need not go any further.

Check out NAH and FERN by Gas (no pun seriously). Minimal electro.

Been listening to Santogold, Spoon (still), assloads of Fleet Foxes and Interpol.

I'm not a big fan of death cab, but that song cath... is excellent. Rest of alblum blows IMHO.

Band of Horses aint too bad. Kings of Leon is hit or miss. Both bands are somewhat similar in that sort of post rock modern alternative way. They have their moments.

Thom Yorke's alblum is pretty decent as well. Like a mix between the postal service and radiohead and bon iver.

And where would I be without some old school friggen rap music:
Nas' Illmatic...dude life's a bitch and then you die. PHATTY song
Kool G Rap and Polo.. Check out the song "fast lane" featuring NAS. Thats a song dude.
Lots and lots of Tribe

That should keep you busy for a little while.
