I want to volunteer before school starts in the fall. Does anyone have some good national nonprofits they volunteered for and had a good experience with? I know I can just google it, but I thought it'd be nice to get more detailed info. Thanks guys!

I have volunteered with 4-H. You get to work with children and help them build leadership skills by running a club while also emphasising a common hobbie or activity. I ride horses and the club I advise participates in our county fair and helps special needs children with therapeutic horseback riding.

Well if you're local to Denver, you can check out places like Denver Rescue Mission or the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. Not sure what you are looking to do, but I always liked serving meals down at the DRM. The 9healthfair starts I believe in April or May, http://www.9healthfair.org/volunteers/volunteers.aspx

I work at a YMCA (not for profit) and all I can say is that I love it. Ive been doing it since I was 14 and it is like my second home.
The people where I work are friendly, I get a lot of respect since I am one of the supervisors, I work with people of all ages as well as people with disabilities. (Im a swim teacher here).
I suggest looking into YMCA if there is one near you, as it is a very widely known NFP organication too.

I volunteered once with M.E.D.I.C.O they go to countries outside the US and they do some work in the US too. Most of their trips are to Honduras and Nicaragua. You can check their web-site:
