Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and so I am sorry if these kinds of questions come up a lot. I just finished up my junior year in college and am looking to apply to vet school this summer. I recently took the GRE's, and my score was a 560 verbal, 680 quantitative, which my academic advisor told me was kind of blah. I currently have a 3.78 overall GPA, 3.82 in just science. I have about three hundred hours of animal experience, two hundred of which were done under combined large and small animal vets and one hundred of which was done at a zoo. I have also been an active member of my school's equestrian team and pre-veterinary society and have gained numerous volunteer hours through those.
My question is, should I take the GRE's again based on that information, or is the rest of my profile strong enough to compensate for my mediocre score? The school I am hoping to attend is the University of Florida, which is my state school.
Thanks so much to everyone who responds and good luck to all of you fellow prospective vets! 🙂

I think a 1240 is just fine, especially with your GPA. Just make sure the rest of your application is in order, and I think you'll be a competitive applicant.

Agreed.

Wish I had had scores like that...🙂

I think you'll be fine---just keep on racking in those hours, and get good recs!!

I also wouldn't bother retaking the GRE, especially since you have a solid GPA.
Just remember that "vet" experience (work done under a DVM, ie your work with the LA/SA vets and possibly the zoo work if you were with a vet) and "animal" experience (ie the equestrian team events) are separate on VMCAS. 300 hours isn't terribe, but I would try to gain more over the summer if I were you 🙂
With that unsolicited advice, best of luck and welcome to the forum! :luck::welcome:

I applied to 4 vet schools, got interviews at all four, denied to one, waitlisted at 2, and accepted to one. My GRE was a 1210 and my cum GPA was a 3.5, and I had roughly 500 hours of vet experience. I'm thinking that you'll be just fine with a little more experience and a well rounded application! Good luck!

I agree. Check out this link for stats on those that were accepted this year.

Hey Sabriel-

I got into UF this year - my cum GPA was a 3.5 and GRE was 1340 (math 780, verb 560). I don't think you'd have a problem at all. If you have more questions, message me - I'd be happy to help. Also, are you at UF right now?

Thanks to everyone for your advice! Whoa, a 1340 is amazing! I'm actually at USF, which also worries me because I heard that UF (no offense) is a bit on the snobbish side about accepting people that didn't go there for undergraduate. That's why I'm concerned about my score... but thanks again for the advice.

Pretty much anything you hear about a vet school prferring (or disliking) graduates or students from a specific university ate going to be nothing but rumors. Don't give it a second's thought.

Okay thanks I'll try not to let that discourage me. Also can anyone tell me about how to submit letters of recommendation? Do we submit them through the VCMAS?

Preferred method: You list the "recommenders" in VMCAS along with their e-mail addresses. VMCAS sends them an e-mail with directions how to send a recommendation on-line. The nice thing is VMCAS also sends out "reminders" to them if they haven't signed in or haven't finished the process. They also send you an e-mail when the recommendation is complete. This eliminates the need to "nag" the people who are trying to say nice things about you.

Alternative method: You list recommenders in VMCAS but say they will be writing an old fashioned hand-written (not literally) letter and sending it snail mail. They don't get reminders. I assume you still get the letter received e-mail but don't really know. If you have a really old-timer they might prefer this method but even the technologically ignorant, 70+ vet I had write me a rec still could manage e-mail🙂

Okay thank you so much!!

All your questions have basically already been answered and I agree with the answers, but I just wanted to pop in and say that I absolutely LOVE the book you got your username from!

Ahhh it's one of my favorites! Even though I never got around to reading the other two books of the trilogy....

I think they're better. But then, I related to Lirael a lot more than Sabriel. And the Dog was pretty amazing. XD

Yeah, being more of a dog person than a cat person (and by virtue of personality), I preferred the Dog.

Lirael was also kind of a mad scientist, which I can totally get behind.

I definitely need to read them! That will be my reward after getting through applications 🙂
