Anyone have any recommendations for sites that are good for:

1) Learning about diseases to a moderate amount of depth (i.e. complexity suitable for a pre-med having completed all pre-reqs)*
2) Keeping abreast of new "discoveries"/happenings in the science/medical world (again in a more in-depth way than what is found on Google News)

*For #1, it would be fantastic to have something that features a different "Disease of the Day/Week" or something along those lines! (diseaseaday.com has the right idea but I don't think it's updated and doesn't go into enough detail since it writes assuming the audience has minimal science/biology background)

Second medscape.

If you have access, uptodate is awesome

If you're willing to pay about 50-75$/year, journalwatch is fantastic - they summarize major journal articles and then have expert commentary, a really good way to get a feel for what's happening in various fields

I'd recommend looking at CDC.gov. You can look at the clinical guidelines and recommendations for a variety of diseases. If you have an ipad or smartphone you can also download their MMWR app and their other CDC apps, you can also subscribe to MMWR (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/mmwrsubscribe.html), I'd also suggest looking into their Public Health Grand Rounds (http://www.cdc.gov/about/grand-rounds/) they vary in their scope, at times mainly focusing on public health and other times getting down to details on the specific diseases they are presenting (e.g. MDR Gonorrhea, etc.). Have fun!

uptodate is excellent, but requires a subscription
