Hey so I'm having some issues this semester...

Right now I'm a sophomore but freshman year I finished with a solid 3.65gpa and I was involved in many ec's including research. Currently, Im the president of a premed club and I organize the blood drive for the university but there has been a lot of other stuff going on.

I'm actually kinda embarrassed by it but I have been through a lot this semester. Chronologically, I was sexually assaulted and later discovered that I had caught something (it's been treated) and then my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer right after she lost her section 8 so now she really has no place to go and finally my cat that I had had since I was 3 passed away from kidney disease so I am going through major depression. As a result, I'm really not able to focus on school and right now my grades really arent looking so hot this semester.

I'm probably going to get a D or C in my physics class and most likely a B in orgo.

Im not really sure what to do at this point because I feel like I'm about to lose my mind... It just seems like I have been dealt a very rough hand because I've had to deal with a lot of things before this too...

Right now I'm definitely not focused, Im wondering could I take my physics pass fail and maybe retake another physics class some other semester. Next semester I'm hoping that things will be better and winter break will give me time to destress and focus on what I need to do.
Any advice?

you shouldn't feel embarassed at all. salvage what you can of this semester, withdraw from some classes if you have to, take time to regroup, and come back strong. you'll get to explain it.

I think your personal wellbeing and health are the most important. Taking the physics class pass/fail and then retaking it later (for hopefully a great grade) will not hinder your chances of getting into medical school. If anyone brings it up during the interview, you have a very valid reason for falling behind (not that you would have to share the details of it if you were not comfortable).

I am so sorry to hear about everything you have had to go through. Just remember to stay strong and that there are brighter days to come. Don't worry about physics.....it can wait until later.

Feel better!

Take Ws or P/F to save your GPA. Doing so won't hurt your eventual chances of getting into med school.

Taking care of yourself is the most important thing for you to do right now. It's understandable that you're feeling overwhelmed with all you've been through. Please talk to a counselor and get some help with dealing with all your stresses.

Is there a sexual assuault survivors group represented on your campus?

No I do not believe that we have such a group... I wouldnt even know how to start one but it isnt the first time it has happened... and yes I am going to counseling at school but I can only do emergency visits because they are pretty full.

if i were you i would drop physics, and just continue with maybe 1-2 classes (orgo and an elective), that way you won't have much on your plate and you'll have more time to regenerate your energy.

Take as many W's this semester as you need to not have to worry about school for this semester. Cope with the important things going on in your life, then come back and rock it.

Everyone has already said it, focus on yourself and family right now and deal with school when you are ready. You'll get a chance to explain yourself and most medical school's won't hold a single bad semester against you when their is clear cause for why it went bad. Good luck with everything.
