I like studying with music, but only if it's the kind that doesn't have the kind of vocals that makes me want to sing along, etc. Personally, I like more mellow music, where I can focus on my work and not the music itself. One artist I really enjoyed listening to while studying is a guitarist by the name of Pat Metheny.

I'm currently using the "Little Miss Sunshine" soundtrack. Most of the songs are instrumental, which I prefer for studying. The music is light, but has an upbeat tempo so as to not put me to sleep. Most of the songs are by Devotchka...whom I am really getting into.....😀

As strange as this sounds, I always have music in my head anyway, so without listening to music, it's sometimes hard for me to do work. I know that sounds kind of crazy, but most everyone always has some kind of music playing in their head. In my case, that tends to be aggrevated by the fact that I'm a cellist, and it's pretty to hard to study when I have a symphony playing in my head.

That said, classical can be really great to study to. Particularly Mozart and similiar composers because their works, while incredibly complex, aren't as difficult to listen to as some later composers (think Mahler). It also helps when I listen to songs that I already know and listen to compulsively. It doesn't distract me to sing along with a song that I don't have to think about singing along with, although I think it distracts my roommate...

Folkish stuff is great too because it tends to be more mellow. My roommate listens to (not to offend anyone) teenangst emo and I think its why her grades suck. 😀

If you're using windows, do this to get a great hidden ambient track in windows XP:

1. Go to my computer, click on windows, then C drive, then system32 folder.
2. Open OOBE folder, then click on images folder.
3. Look for an audio file called: title.wma
4. Play and enjoy.

I love that track, and it'll give you a taste for what ambient music is.

I listen to stuff I've listened to so much it almost sounds like background noise to me now. Both of these are high on the list (Kid A was one of my earliest study albums), another example would be Wowee Zowee by Pavement because I've heard it approximately an infinite amount of times. It's my favorite😍😍😍

I wasn't too big on electronica before but that has officially changed as of tonight. no problem cagedbird, if you need any help importing that song into itunes I'd be glad to help you. You should be able to just click import and itunes should convert it to whatever format you had selected in the preference menu. If this doesn't work (then its because it's locked by windows DRM protection) then you have to burn the song to a cd as you would a regular audio cd (you windows media player) and then rip the song again back to your pc into mp3 -then import to itunes - problem solved. Use a cd-rw if you have any so you can save a disc 😉

Hey good thread. I listen to music pretty much all because of where I work and that my ipod is pretty much always on (car, home, etc.). Even if music isn't playing, I always seem to have a song in my head but as for studying, I don't discriminate. It could be Avril or Alicia Keys, the Fray, Rob Thomas, or some of that Big Poppa🙂 Complete silence makes me crazy so I always need background noise and music seems to work well.

I run on pure adrenaline, and sometimes caffeine (although I'd rather just do it naturally). So yea, no music, unless I'm reviewing a bunch of lectures in a row. I try to listen to something light (to squeeze out the last drop of my attention span) or something fast (to wake me up, get adrenaline going).

What's soothing that helps me concentrate? Knowing that in X amount of time, the test I'm studying for will be over...

Example: In 59 hours, this Biochem exam will be behind me. 😍
