Let me know when you get into med school and how you do in your step 1. Then compare your med student life/experiences with that data/survey results.
All I can say is that if you're 100% determined to become a doctor regardless of any obstacles then show it. Show your passion and determination to beat the odds. I was rejected by ~20 MD schools. I could have given up and tried for next year cycle but I took a risk and applied to few DO schools as I didn't want to give up so easily. I knew it's gonna be challenging and almost every day I felt like I should not try at all. Pick a diff career or apply next year. But I took a risk and applied to DO schools at the last min. Many of my frnds laughed at me when I told them my score and crazy enough to go against the odds. But regardless of all that... I did it. DO school faculties saw my positive attitude and determination through personal statement and interviews.
In total of 7 DO schools called me for the interviews, I gave only 2 interviews (mostly because I blew up $$$ for MD secondaries apps and lack of responses) and luckily both DO schools accepted me.

@ bigbluebear: No I'm not hurt by any criticism as I was expecting it in the 1st place. but at the same time many of you emailed me and I replied to all. Hope it helped.

MD/PhD is roughly 8 years dude, people also take more years to do research.

You're right, but they also won't let you matriculate.

The Mcat is at best moderately correlated with success in medical school and USMLE step performance. There are a lot of factors in the mix here.

This is true, but it is also directly correlated with your success in medical school applications. Outliers exist (like the OP, if true), but in general a 5 on a section is an auto MD rejection and a likely DO rejection as well.

Outliers do exist in medical school:

Here's my class of 2014

2 ppl failed the step 1 DO exam
2 ppl dropped out of the medical school after year 1 because they couldn't handle the heat
4 ppl repeated the year 1 because they failed 3 or more final exams = failing 3 subjects (pharm, GI syst, neruo syst etc.. )

I guarantee that above ppl didn't have 5 in VR. So once again.. MCAT is not the best predictor of your performance in med school and USMLE/COMLEX.

Only 10 ppl in my class were straight out of undergrad like myself with BS degree. Majority had MS and >5 yrs undergrad education training.

Some people held degree as physical therapist, nurse practitioner, optomologist assistant, ER tech, paramedics, diet specialist/nutritionists. These guys obviously did well/Avg in MCAT and really well in Step 1 'cause of their solid background knowledge.

4 students with active military duty and have military scholarships. = they are the best at disciplining themselves, time management and high confidence. = those 4 made it to top 10.

I don't think any of the above students have VR 5. Yet some didn't matriculate through yr 1 and 2 and some will matriculate in 2014 with honors.
I am NOT #1 and feel like any other avg medical student. Regardless of my VR 5, I'll be a doctor in 2014. All it took was some courage back in 2010 when i applied for the admission.

I posted this thread about 2 yrs ago as I passed my step 1 exam.
Many of you thought this was all scam. Some of you did email me and asked me great questions.
well... as for now...
I simply wanted to update you and let you know I am currently a 4th year and will be graduating this May. I got accepted into a well established family medicine residency program in my hometown.
It'll be a great pleasure to serve the community where I grew up...

4 years of medical school has been one heck of a journey. There were many ups and downs, get my ass kicked by preceptors/residents, get to save lives and deliver babies for the first time. None of it would have been possible without the support from my family and close friends. The biggest piece of advice I'll give you is don't let anyone get to you... if u know yourself then you can do it... have some faith
