Hi! So I got accepted into an MD/PhD program, but I have no interest in doing the PhD anymore. I'm going to talk to the school about dropping the PhD but in the case they won't let me, I'd rather reapply than take the seat from another student. Does this look bad? Or is it something I can explain away in the application?

They should easily let you drop the PhD portion. Shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not entirely sure. Let's say worst case scenario, I don't want to drop the PhD after matriculating and make it seem like I wanted a free year of school so I contact the school and they say MD/PhD or nothing. How would that look as a reapplicant?

At my school the MD/PhD students that change their mind don't after two years don't even have to pay the tuition back. People generally understand that people's minds change about that. I'm not telling you to go to your school and get two free years, by the way. But it also may be better to matriculate and then tell them, just to selfishly make sure you have a seat.
