My program gives us the following during our CA-1 year:

Miller
Baby Miller
Stoelting books (both coexisting diseases and the pharm version)
Chestnut OB
There may be a few more, but this is all I recall at the moment.

Any books that would be reasonable to get now as a CA-0, that would be beneficial now and in the future and is not in the above list?

I have online access to M&M and Longnecker.

Thanks!

Go ahead and splurge on the big ICU book. Ive read that thing at least twice cover to cover. Really easy to get through.

I'm glad I had a copy of Jaffe's Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures at home early in my CA1 year.

It was great to be able to read about a specific case I'd never done before and have an idea of what to do before calling my attending for the next day.

+2 for Jaffe, great quick read for the night before and tells you pretty much everything you need to know and should expect for the case.

Jaffe is available through my universities online library. I would check to make sure you dont already have access to it before buying it.

For sure. I know my online library has the MGH procedures book and some sorta ICU book, amongst other things... I'll definitely take a closer look before doing anything. Thanks again for your help!

looks like some interesting music choices. youtube will never fail me.

Peter Steele was a brilliant musician. Goth metal doesn't get much respect however. They even have a song titled "Anesthesia."

Great. Thanks!

Apparently there's a handbook version to Stoelting's co-existing diseases book. Anyone looked at that?

Also, MGH has an Anesthesiology Handbook (similar to the red/green medicine handbook). Worth a consideration? It has great reviews but I've not read anyone on here using it..

Still looking into Hall for the most part, though. My online library does have Jaffe.

I'm in no rush to buy anything at this moment till I'm done with Step 3. Looking to take it in December.

I have both. Stoelting's big book (not the handbook)( latest edition) is somethink like clinical medicine for anesthesiologists. It's great book, and till now i didn't have problem finding a disease and it's anesthetic considerations. Very helpful though has many details. I think the handbook must be somehow more concise and practical.

MGH Clinical anesthesia procedures (i have the 2002 edition, i think there are two newer), is also a great book. Concise, to the point, practical, has almost everything you want for everyday practise. It's perfect for keeping in the pocket for quick intraoperative reference.

Personally however find more practical the Oxford Handbook of anaesthesia. Probably it's best suited to european and especially british way of anaesthesia, but has everything you are looking for at 3 am having in front of you a patient with myriads of comorbidities for a procedure that you have never came accross and have no one to help you.

hey, Dr4life, how are you? settled in in mass? personally don't like the hall question book. love marino icu book. wish i saved the bucks i spent on coexisting diseases. jmho

Hey Amyl, I'm great. Settled in and month numero dos halfway done. I like the hospital and the residents, staff, etc.. How are you? Less than a year to go, must be excited! Which question book do you prefer?

not a big fan of question books... sometimes people tend to "recognize" the question and make a mistake.... just doesnt work for me.... i am better understanding the concept rather than getting a feel for what they are going to ask... which is probably why i ran out of time on the last akt. hall is probably the best but barash has a pretty good question book that goes along with their text and provides references if you need to read the whole story and not just the little blurb that answers the question.
yeah, less than a year to go.... lost about the job search and VERY envious of my fellow residents that just went for the fellowship and put the process off for a year. still considering doing locums for a year and then maybe a cards fellowship... been working bad hours lately tho so i am just not making any decisions right now d/t chronic fatigue on cards now... sicu next will be lighter and less involved. keep in touch, xo, a

Best of luck... you'll figure something out and find a great job/locums position. definitely keep me updated, and i'll keep in touch as well. just been super busy thus far, this semester is a rough one. :luck:

Hi! I also have some book money to spend.... What did you end up deciding on as the most useful books to get?

Hall question book
Anesthesia Secrets
Anesthesia procedures of MGH
MGH Anesthesiology Handbook/Pocket book ??
Jaffe's Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures (check if its available online)

Do you think we need to get the most recent editions? Or inheriting one from a few years back is ok?

Jaffe's, MGH procedures books were avail online for me. Also, in the library. So, I didn't buy those.

I bought the question book. I felt I had a sufficient source not to require anesthesia secrets.

I'd say the pocket book and Hall book are your best bets. If you need a good resource, then Secrets suffices too.

I'm sorry to ask such a dumb question...but my google research and review of past posts have only confused me further

I have a big red book called "basics of anesthesia 6th edition" by MILLER AND PARDO...is this baby miller? I'm almost done with it and it has been a fantastic resource for my purposes

I was going to go to MGH next...and then Secrets...

EDIT : Anyone have any other suggestions for someone doing CA1 next year?

yep that's baby miller. I wouldn't call it big though, sure it's not a pocket book but it's not a full txt book either.
