Has anyone here been thinking like I have on ways to make money while in dental school?? I mean im sure we can spare a day or 2 in a week to do something. My friend has a vending idea that seems to be pretty rewarding if done right and it does not really take that much time at all. Just a thought..anyone else want to add on somethings that they are doing now or have done to make some money?? Lets keep it to a point that its worth doing though if u know what I mean

Specifically what can you do with so little time? Can you spare the secrets?
I'm sure you can trade online while waiting for your patients to show up. Beside that?

UofM01,

I'm all ears too! I'm thinking about bartending or serving on weekends(if studies permits)!? I need money too!! 😕

For example bubble gum vending. It costs very little and requires very little time. You only need a few days to start up and set them up in stores and only go back about 1 or 2 times a month just to collect your quarters. It does not cost much to fill it up with gum balls and the owners of buisness will usually not give you a hard time about wanting to put it in their stores. This is only an idea though. Andy maybe we can think of something together?

Ali,

That would be kind of funny!! Would we need to file taxes for that? I think I may just go with the traditional job. Have you thought about a campus job? I looked into that, it looks kind of cool. Pays ok and we'll probably get to study while we sit there!! 😎

Taxes?? NO just chew up all the evidence!

Yes I have though about a campus job before but from all the schools I have been at they pay so little. Investments are important because 4 years down the line it could be worth a lot more ie, vending routes, realestate (if u have good credit and the down payment). Well im just bored as you can tell!

I know a guy who bakes really good bread and sells it to local restaurant every friday. Can you do that?
I don't plan to get into kitchen after school.
Traditional job like feeding fish at fish labs can be very flexible. You can feed at your own time. Check out your campus and research labs. There may be lots of opportunities out there.

TinkerBell, Baking bread is not one of my greatest talents, although I give that guy a lot of credit Im sure hes doing well for himself. Keep the ideas COMING!!!!

A friend of mine does real estate appraisal in the weekend. You have to take 2 classes and be certified with a state license though. But all that can be done at a community college in one semester. Better yet, it's a sat. class too. And now i'm sure you can take those classes online. And he makes lots of money

Hey thats not a bad idea. Do u have to market yourself to the agents or is it something that is really easy to get hired into?

Are you in dental school tinkerbell? IF so are you thinking about taking care of buisness while in school with these awesome jobs???

You have to do intern with some kind of appraisal agency at first. For a few month I think. Then, you can be your own boss open your own business and advertise yourself with real estate agents.
I'm sure the market is hot in FL.
UofM, I'm not in dental school yet unfortunatelly. I'm in UCSF Dental Post-bac Program. I receive stipend from the school as well as free tuition and lots of privilege from ucsf. And I am not allowed to work once I'm in school. Sigh....I just signed the contract agree not to work yesterday...
I can't wait until I get into dental school. Then, I can run my own business.

Good Luck Tinker Bell! It sounds so weird calling you that lol. If you have any questions pertaining to applying just send me a PM. I will keep you posted on the money making while in dental school!

Thanks and pls keep me posted.
Anyone has any ideas pls keep them coming.

At Tufts, my sister's friends in dental school were able to take the State's qualifying exams to be dental hygenist. I think that at the end of their third year or something like that they were quailifed to take the exam. Anyhow, many of her friends did this and worked part-time during their 4th year and especially on the weekends. Dental Hygenist make very good money, and her friends were able to earn a considerable amount of money during the 4th year. I am not sure how different schools have different policies regarding this. But it seems very encouraging if dental students can do this during their fourth year, since there is less of a demand in school since most spend time in clinics and not so much time studying for written exams and such compared to 1st and 2nd year, or so I was told. Earning extra money also helps a great deal during 4th year, especially for those of us at private schools, since taking the board exams and such cost money, moving back home or moving somewhere else will cost money, paying for people to be patients, etc, and just simply having some money to live on when you owe around 200,000 bucks at the end of your school career, 🙂
So perhaps maybe we can start asking around to see which school allows 3rd and 4th year dental students to work as dental hygenist on the side???

a funny story
an undergrad that i know, he buys brand name things from classified ads and sell them on ebay.
Recently, he bought a Chanel purse for $50 from a classifed ad. He posted it on ebay, and people were willing to pay up to $200 hundred dollars for it. Easy right?
No,
Chanel emailed him, yep, the folks at Chanel emailed him saying that in order to sell it, he must have a certificate certifying that it is a REAL Chanel purse!!!! My friend got so pissed, he is now stuck with the Chanel purse, he says he will just give it to his Mom, and he swears that it is real, but he can't sell it!!
He has sold several other brand name items before, but I thought this was hilarious!

Shhh. I told you not to tell that story. Now, everyone knows that I have a purse. On the bright side, t does go well with the dress I'm wearing. Ewww. I have beard stubble. We can't have that. Does anyone know what I can do to hide my adam's apple?

At a lot of schools they have paid dental assistant positions that dental students can take (for marginally less than a trained assistant) - ask your school if they offer such opportunities and training.

In addition, you could teach for Kaplan (the DAT class) - that pays really REALLY well and is not too burdensome on your schedule.

These are all awesome ideas. I would check out the dental hygienist option at dental schools next year.

How about just being a biology or chemistry tutor for high school students? You can make quite a bit and I'm sure they will think highly of you because you are in dental school.

The dental hygenist jobs would only apply to dental students in the state of massachuss.(TUFTS,HARVARD,BU). Something about a shortage of dental hygenists in that state and a law was passed that dental students after finishing their second year can take the test and work as a hygenist in 3rd and 4th years. I heard it pays like 35-40/hr!!

Beagle's got the right idea. But you have to zero in on those parents who think they have spawned a future noble prize winner in medicine (which should be an abundant market in the suburbs of Southern California). The parents will be overjoyed but the kids will want to puke. Hey, it's the parents who have the money and delusions of granduer about their DNA...so who cares.

I just got a job where I get paid $7.50 anh hour to sleep. I will be working at a group home for people with Prader-Willi syndrome. The shift starts at 10pm and ends at 7:00. All i have to do is be there in case of an emergency. I will probably study some and then sleep, you should try to find a job like this. I figure studying and sleeping is what I would be doing anyways why not get paid for it.

The gum ball idea is classic in that you have a future dentist who is "creating" future business in a way. Maybe some carmel or taffy to pop out loose fillings as well? I'd go that route!
