What? Why should we be OK that people want to make a certain group's name a derogatory word? Especially a group that has suffered a history (and present) of severe discrimination and hatred?

I'm irritated by the people that get irritated by the people that are offended by that. Gain some perspective.

but the OP wasn't using it as hatred towards the LGBTs... Context is more defining IMO. But i do respect disagreement.

May I ask why are you disappointed with your grades this quarter? It seems that it is higher than your cum and it is in a decent level? Just show I cant try to see what exactly your mad about.

mainly cause if my AB was an A my gpa would be 3.75. Also my gpa went up from 3.613 to 3.615
 
Is today national "get your grades" day for colleges or something? Also, 3.6 is average for med schools. Things could be worse.

but yeah, i guess you may be on to something.. anything below a perfect GPA and one may probably not be able to earn an acceptance anywhere.. such is the unfair world..

1) Do people use "gay" in the pejorative because their vocabularies are that limited or because it makes them look "hard"? In either case it's very unbecoming of an aspiring healthcare leader, bro.
2) We have as much prerogative to call you out on your insensitive flippancy as you do to create pointlessly narcissistic "woe is me" threads. You know quite well your GPA is nothing to complain about, drop the theatrics.

You are way too thin-skinned to become a physician... Or a gardener, or a golf ball collector. Take a few years off school and go work in customer service or in the food industry. When you come back, you will be so scared of failing, you will get straight As and will be a lot less brittle. You will then be ready to log on to SDN.

It's telling that the only people I know who use "gay" to mean "stupid" are males. It's really rare to hear females use "gay" as a negative term. Is it because men find it empowering to denigrate others, to emasculate other men in order to enhance their own masculinity? Bl4ckout and OP, do you throw the "gay" word around because you don't feel masculine enough? Do you want to be more tough? To feel cool by belittling the downtrodden? You're not impressing anyone.

And OP, did you open this thread thinking you would get a bunch of people telling you everything is rainbows and butterflies and you'll be ok! or what? Your doing fine, keep it up, stay involved, and do well on the MCAT and you shouldn't have a problem. Your only enemy is yourself.

TL;DR: Gay isn't going anywhere. Its not solely reserved for LGBTs. Its a part of a national/wordly phenomena of adolescent policing. OP what did you expect?

Depending on where you go, that really isn't a bad GPA. My guess is if you are upset over this, you have the typical pre-med sense of entitlement and probably didn't work hard enough. 🙄 Xo M

You're citing a wiki page and an inaccessible article to support your argument? :laugh: That a certain term is widely used in the modern lexicon is not a self-justifying truth. Would you say "that's so ghetto" to express disapproval in a professional or even casual setting? Can you see how this might be perceived as lacking sophistication and tact?

Homosexuals are not claiming "ownership" of the word; it is a word that has been leveled against them with a history of discrimination and violence, which you might well know. At one point in time, it was perfectly acceptable to use the "n" word. Fortunately society has largely grown more enlightened.
