It really depends. Your gpa is useless. Your rank is more important. You want to be in about the top 15% of your class to be competitive. If you want to go into ortho, oral surgery, endo, you probably need a higher board score, somewhere in the 90's. None of these rules are absolute though. Good luck.

Well, unfortunately my school doesn't rank students. I also scored a 86 on my part 1. Very depressing. If someone got into a school with these grades let me know.

Hi,

I wanted to know what this ranking by schools is? I am an international dentist and my school back in India dint rank.

Oh. I am not talking about international students getting into american schools. I have no clue what gpa/rank/boards you need for that. I was simply talking about American dental school students and the stats they need to go to American specialty schools in general. My mistake.

hey guys ,
am an indian...so foreign trained dentists who have gone thru the same things and experience please reply..i wrote this coz some misunderstanding was there in previous posts...
so please any helps will be highly appreciated!!!!!!

Hi Elena,

I really have no clue..but 85 plus is the cut off for some schools..so you really dont have to worry. Its is definitely a decent score and not the end of world! browse through the schools that have 85 as cut off...see through the past threads posted here..I am sure people with that score have written abt their experiences..i am yet to give exams..so cant tell you more than that..

good luck..
you still have chances..dont worry

Calm down. I know how exactly it feels when you get lower score than you expected. . Don't get disheartened. Though I don't want you to disappoint you, it is good know the reality, so here are some facts:
1) 87 is not a very competitive score. There are some people who got into good schools in the past with lower score than 87. But in general I would say it is very difficult to get anywhere with 87, unless if you have extra ordinary credentials like.. US experience, research publications, masters, good recommendation letters, and visa status ( it is plus if you are citizen or permanent resident). But single most important factor which keeps stand out in the croud is your score. It is a bit difficult to even make to interview with 87.
2) If you are form any other country than India, there might be good chances with that score, as most of the programs look for cultural diversity too. As there too many people from India with very good scores (most of them above 90), it would be difficult with your score.
3) My suggestion is while you improve your CV (by working as DA, involve in some research, get good contacts etc..) , take it again and try to improve the score. I am sure you can make it.
4) Your GPA is not too bad, not too good either. Class ranks are not given form India, and US schools do not bother about class ranks form abroad.

hi elena,
your score of 87 is tricky, most people will tell you to retake it if u r indian, and they are partly right. i know many people with scores bet 81-87 who got into a program, look into the acceptance thread and you iwll feel better.and i know many people with scores 89 who retook it. so you have a chance, tak eit, apply with good resume, work exp......and if it doesnt work then retake it next year.definitely apply to nyu, i dunt see why they wudnt call u if you hav a good work exp and good personal statement.good luck

I agree with Godbless. The schools dont just look into scores. They look at all the other things that you have been doing . If you were sitting at home studying for part 1 this past year doing nothing else, it probably would be a tough call. But with your work experience, I am sure it will help you. You have to put down your application in front of you and see if you have utilized everybit of your time you can towards dentistry. That's all. Self-evaluate yourself. Each one is going to tell you differently. It is for you to decide what is to be done.

Don't feel bad about your score, I have 2 friends that got 84 and 86 and both got accepted in NYU, I just found out I got and 81 on my test,,,, I really dont want to take it again, I'd rather take the step 2, please reply back

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me whether a score of 91 is good to apply and which schools would be the best to apply too.

Thanks in advance,

Hey guys, I just got my results also and I barely passed. I got an 85 on part I. 🙁 but, Im an American citizen who studied abroad internationally. Was born and raised in US, got my bachelors in human bio and chemistry, but after i decided to go to Mexico to go to dental school. I am presently in 8th semester and took my part I while in school. As of right now, I have a 3.65 according to ECE. Do you guys happen to know if that is a factor in their decision process?...whether i have had an education within the US? anyways, DO you guys think i have a chance getting an interview with this score? thanx in advance.

ps. BTW, I'm Nicaraguan-American if that helps any.

HI Dr Ace, you have really a good background to get accepted at international program. Just see the acceptance thread, there are so many people with markes near 80 in part-1 got accepted. And about the chances for the interview, ofcourse yes, you will get the interview as many as 8 out of 10.California schools are not giving much importance to part I score, but their clinical exams are challanging. try hard and hard. So dont worry , be happy.

you should take part II, it improves your application. and you can apply more dental schools with part II, like Tuft, Upit, Loma linda.
