Received via snail mail (hard copy) today, letter dated September 3. They screen heavily for secondaries, so all get interview invites (similar to Vandy). Anyway, just wanted to let you folks know to keep your eyes open. 👍

Yes, you have to fill out an in-state residency form as part of the supplemental.

I'm still waiting for mine. After getting deferred EDP, it would be a real slap in the face if I didn't even get a secondary. So they expect to get it back within 10 days? Does that mean postmarked within 10 days of the day you received it or is there a specific date mentioned in the letter? Are there any essay questions?

You'll get one, chill. As long as they consider you an instate applicant and you didn't put anything awful on your application in terms of personal statements etc.

jeez, what time do you guys get your mail??? i dont get mine til 2 in the afternoon...its only 10:30 on the east coast!!!

can anyone disclose the essay question??

I am premed. Isn't chilling against our creedo? Did you get yours yet? I suppose they send them out in waves. In all fairness, I submitted my app on 6/2 and have been waiting for over three months. Plus, I know they've looked at my app already, so what I want to know is:

Where is the love?

Me too. I will even get nervous as I turn the key on my mailbox.

*obsessing*

It is really straightforward....... 2 pages about criminal record and name/address etc

essay prompt:
Among other qualities, we seek candidates who bring commitment, initiative, and independence to their volunteer activities, research projects, and/or health-related employment. Please describe an activity in which you have participated that exemplifies these qualities, as they relate to medicine. (300 words)

Mine says it has to reach by 17th........ nothing about postmarked stuff

Uh oh. What if I don't have one? I mean, I could give an example of my commitment, my initiative, and my independence, but it would be three examples, not one. And what if it doesn't relate to medicine? This could be tricky.

Too bad I never organized a blood drive or did an independent research project. 🙁

Hey, do any of you guys want to donate some blood? Call me...

i6614, your obsessing is making me obsess. stop it!

Ok, but only if you sign up for my blood drive. 😉

I didn't get one either. :scared:

I don't think they mail them all together, though. I know of two reapplicants that got secondaries last year and haven't gotten them yet this year (both of whom say that UNC likes to take it slowly). Also, Peterock didn't say that he got one yet. If he's not worried, we probably don't need to be. I just like to worry anyway. I'm not sure how good it is for my health though...

Right now I'm more concerned about that essay question. You're the only one signed up for my phony blood drive. 🙁

WTF is going on? are we screwed?

I've been told by others that got secondaries last year that I should get one just based on my stats alone. But hey, nothing's guaranteed. I don't think we're out for the count yet though. Maybe they were so underwhelmed by us that they decided to wait until they see the August MCATers first. If it looks like slim pickings at that point, they might decide to revisit the reject pile.

Another possibility is that they are doing what Wake is doing. Basically, they have an interview waitlist. They don't word it this way, but that's essentially what it is.

I wonder if they send out rejection letters or if you just have to figure it out for yourself.

Anyway, in a couple more weeks they will be done dealing with the EDP applicants, so I expect something to happen after that.

Don't get too worked up about it.

UNC is slllooooowwwwww....

Last year I interviewed in the beginning of October.

December I received a note saying my application was still under review.

In the middle of MAY, I receive a note saying I'm on the waitlist (yes, this is 8 months after I interviewed). A week later, I get a phone call saying I'm off the waitlist. And here I am....

In other words, it might end well, but stay calm and don't drive yourself crazy with the waiting.

Me too. I have gotten a secondary already from every other school that I applied to (all within 2-3 weeks of applying). At least I have something to keep me busy while UNC makes up their mind.

Hey i61164 and others,

I have already posted the essay question. Rest of the secondary is just filling your name and address etc.....and they give you like 7-8 days for the secondary to REACH there....so as long as you have your essay ready.....you can just fill it out and send it.....

I am sure you will get it soon......let me say it again.....they are SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW..... so don't worry.....I think they send out in waves......once they get back the secondaries from everyone in the first wave (from the deadline dates (friday 17th) I am guessing that they will send next batch on 20th of this month......

All the best and hope to see you all there......and remember a secondary means interview.....so i guess it is worth the wait rather than filling the sec app and then not hearing for 2 months......

thanks for the words of encouragement. sitll, cant help but feel anxious about it....just ranting i guess...

Chill out people. This is my 3rd time, yes 3rd time applying to UNC. They are slow as everyone has said. I called and spoke to Lisa on Monday and she said they are still early in the process. They have only sent out secondaries early in Sept. She said you will hear something sooner than later.

Seriously, calm down or you will be in for a wild ride over the next 12 months, courtesy of UNC med.

If you have any questions let me know, I will try to answer them.

i664.. I was deferred EDP as well after receiving an EDP interview this year. Don't know what that means, but its ok.

When Dr. Hoole talked to our group on interview day, he told us that if you are on hold then it is good because you go in front of the committee multiple times and better the chances of getting in.....I don't know what it means but the ECU people said the same thing that they accept very few outright....

Do you mean that they are sending out more secondaries? I know that UNC takes it's time accepting people. I learned that by hanging out on all the c/o 2008 UNC threads. But, IIRC the waiting began after the interview, not before receiving a secondary. Most SDNers interviewed in September and October.

I got deferred before receiving an interview. I don't know what it means either, but it can't be good right? Have you received an EDP interview all three times? If you are a stronger candidate than me (which I can infer from the fact that you received an EDP interview and I did not) and you have been rejected twice, I better start emotionally preparing myself. 🙁

I actually called UNC today to see whats up with their secondaries. Apparently a lot of their staff has been on vacation, including the dean. The dean arrived back yesterday and they're jumping on it now. Should hear about more secondaries arriving soon!

Sorry I misspoke earlier. This is my 3rd time applying. First time Regular decision-- rejected post interview late. Last year EDP, received EDP interview, waitlisted, rejected Aug. This time EDP, deferred pre-interview. Now I am regular applicant, awaiting my secondary.

Like I said calm down everyone. Your time will come. It's ok if you get rejected from medical school. There is a reason why. You learn a lot about yourself in the post college years. Trust me, you will mature a great deal post college. Remember yourself in high school? Probably not, you are not the same person. Remember college? You will be different in a few years. Just wait.

I see. It sound like we are in the same boat then. I wish I had as good of an attitude as you. I am already 6 years out of college and this is my first time applying. In addition to pursuing a new career in medicine, I am also trying to escape my crappy old career. If I don't get in this year, it just means one more year of suffering in my current job.

Interviewer: So, i61164, what will you do if you don't get accepted to medical school this year?

i61164: Become an alcoholic.

No man......there is always hope 🙂

have patience......

Does anybody know how long it usually takes UNC to schedule an interview after our secondary has been submitted?

I spoke to someone in the admissions office at UNC yesterday and he told me that they have 3 times the number of applicants that they usually have. Does anyone know any more details about this? I wonder how many of the "extra" applicants are in-state vs. out-of-state. Anyway, all this extra competition can't be good for my chances. The guy told me they are getting more applications every day and they are way behind in just sending out the letters that say "we received your app." I think he said they still have 1,200 to send out. I said "What about the secondary? I applied in June." He was like "the process is gonna drag out, it's still early." I said "Are the secondaries sent out in any particular order?" He said no, but the fact that I applied early should mean that I won't be the last to get a secondary (if I get one at all :scared: ). I find it hard to believe that there's no order.

There cannot be that large of an increase of NC-in state applicants. All that increase is the poor schmoes who will get filtered by UNC's policy of accepting only 18% of non-nc residents.

finally received that secondary. now my ulcer can subside for a lil while...

I thinks it's actually 20/160 = 12.5%, but I hope you're right about the increase being primarily out-of-staters. Even if I do get a secondary, I'm still not sure what to talk about for that essay question...
