I may take an attending job a a university.

It would be good to know what other folks are making, good to know a range at least. Good also to know what my colleagues are making. There seems to be numerous databases out there which list by name and department whose making what.

I'm wondering how useful these databases are, however. I looked up "Surgery" at one Midwestern institution, and lots of attendings were making $120K. I know Surgery income isn't what it used to be, but that just seems way to low.

Could it be that these sites only report the "teaching" income that faculty get? Is the "clinical" income perhaps seperate and not reported? I'm trying to understand how academics' pay works.

You should probably go find the AAMC or MGMA survey for overall data.
You are correct in that many public databases of university physicians only report their university salary which is often just based on rank/title (e.g. Assistant professor) and does not reflect a clinical "supplement" or faculty group practice distribution.

However, many universities report the combined amount publically, and they do report total cash compensation to AAMC or MGMA if they participate. Many libraries carry a copy of at least the AAMC book.

Those salaries are meaningless. In general, they are the base salary that the university provides and the doc makes money through grants, the VA system, and other sources. Still, you'll make way less in academics than PP.

I've tried to do my research (esp in path) about salaries, and the results I get are all over the place. I'm wondering if there's a most reliable source/survey that realistically indicates salary expectations (of course depending what area the country you're going to.)

I've heard some cardiology attendings @my institution start around 180k, but I'm not sure if that includes all benefits. I'm assuming the interventionalists make significantly more.
