GPA average for accepted applicants is rising steadly.
How much will 3.7 be lower than average in 2012?
3.7 is the most likely GPA that I'll apply with in 2011 or 2012.

I imagine a 3.7 will still be right around the matriculant average or just above it. There's no way to accurately predict how those scores will fluctuate. I do think it's safe to say that the average GPA and MCAT scores won't change all that much over the next few years, though.

why not worry about this in 2012?

So, you are a freshman, yes?

You should focus on obtaining the best GPA that you possibly can. However, a 3.7 will probably be around the average or right above it. No one can predict the future. I doubt the average GPA will change that much, though.

I'm actually a junior.
I'm thinking of taking 1 or 2 years off after graduation to recharge and do things that would upgrade my application.

Now, my other question: with that kind of GPA, what kind of EC's would you need to be competitive, especially if you're a student in Canadia applying to US schools?

given that the aamc has mandated a 35% increase in us allopathic med school enrollment by 2012 (could be 2015?), i would actually bet that the average gpa would decrease somewhat staying at about 3.6ish.

probably as competitive as applying to Canadian schools, which unfortunately takes the supposed benefit out of applying to US schools.. 🙁

If you will have a 3.7, why take some time off? Assuming your MCAT is good (30+), and solid extracurriculars, you would have no problem getting into medical school.

The problem is that I'm a non-US citizen in Canada and my current ECs are seriously lacking. My ECs right now are:

-ER volunteer, 3 hrs/wk. (Since August 2008)
-Toastmasters, 2 hrs/wk. (Since October 2008)
-Volunteering in a biochem lab (September 2007-May 2008)
-Undergrad summer research in the same lab (Summer 2008).
-Poster presentation at a research poster competition, no award (Summer 2008)
-Part-time job as a cashier at fast-food restaurent, 6 hrs/wk. (Since February 2007)

Based on current trends I think you should need to get something around a 4.2 to be competitive in 2012!:scared:

Really just do the best you can and take classes you like that challenge you. If you worry too much about your GPA it leads to problems like taking the easy classes just so you can get a high GPA and that's no good....
