if you repeat a course....are both grades counted...(average taken)...or the highest?
like how will my science gpa be calculated?

im a pre-med i know nothing about optometry....
i just dont have a grade gpa and so im thinking of other options
my sci gpa is around 3.0 (if u take the avg of repeated courses)...and cum is like 3.4

how competitive is that for optometry?
how is the gpa of ppl who get in?
and wat about OAT....are they like mcat?
im taking my mcat in a couple months...if i study for my mcat shud i mostly be prepared for oat?

plz lemme know..
im just discovering this field of study

I'm not sure about other schools, but I know that ICO takes ALL courses (including repeat courses) into account when calculating GPAs. I think the average GPAs of people who got accepted is around 3.3-3.5, so you are on the right track.

I think the MCATS and the OATS are pretty similar, although people say the MCATS are harder than the OATS. If you are studying for the MCATs, I think you're good to go for the OATs.

GOodluck!

You can use MCAT stuff to prep for the OAT, that's what I did. The MCAT is more difficult than the OAT, plus the test formats are different. MCAT is more passaged based, whereas the OAT has stand alone questions, aside from the reading comprehension section. If you do the verbal from MCAT then do the reading comprehension for the OAT, the OAT will seem like a walk in the park.

PLEASE do some research and gain some experience in the field before you apply. If you're only doing it b/c you don't think you can get into med school, you'll be in for a world of disappointment.

i think thats exactly wat im doing rite now? I have NOT applied as of now.
thanx for ur advice.

ceely: Thanks a lot. Do u by any chance know if michigan counts all grades or just the repeated ones? i was looking at their website but i didnt come across anything

bobbio: ok thats good. so i shudnt have a problem with OATs if im well prepared for my mcat 🙂

you might want to consider retaking classes to get a higher gpa. Since your "transfering" over, or atleast thinking about it, i doubt you have experience /exposure in the field...which would have helped your 3.0 out, assuming you had high OATs. But just try to do well on the OATs if you take it, and retake courses for a higher GPA.

Good luck in your decision

Each school has their own way of calculating science GPAs. For repeat courses, some will average the difference and some will take the higher grade. To find out which school uses which method, call the schools you would be interested in and ask.

As far as your situation, before you start thinking about whether you could get in, you need to figure out what you want to do with your life. Start shadowing the professions you might be interested in before you worry about whether you could get in given the current circumstances. If you find that medical school is where you really want to be, do a post-bac and bring up your grades or do whatever it takes to get there. Optometry should not be your consolation prize for not being able to get into med school at the moment.
