I am a sophomore (by hours) biology major that transferred from a small private university in Texas to a large public university. I took bio I and chem I at the private school and made 'C's in the lectures and 'A's in the labs, making my sGPA a 2.5 (these grades were due to a lack of maturity/effort on my part). After the transfer I enrolled in bio II and chem II at my new university and quickly found myself behind, once again due to joining a fraternity and not staying on top of my studies, and I am now currently playing the "catch up" game in both courses.

Seeing as it is already the end of week 8 in the semester and my grades in these courses are looking like a very tough B-/C+ at best, should I withdraw from them and simply retake them later on, perhaps when i'm back on track and can start fresh? I've heard that a 'W' looks a lot better than a 'C' in your basic science courses..

Any help would be much appreciated, it's been a pretty rough semester so far and I am at the point where I desperately need advice and any motivation you guys have to continue with my goal of becoming a dentist. 🙁

Well...If I were you, I would just take 2 W's and retake them next quarter. If you really want to be a dentist. You don't need motivations from random people on the internet. Just spend more time on your textbook than partying. It's that simple.

I would suggest taking the classes again, if possible. Chemistry and Biology are especially important subjects to have a strong foundation in. If for nothing else, to help you out on your DAT. So take the classes again, get a good understanding of the material. If you go on to take the DAT and kill it, schools will recognize that even though you didn't do so well in the classes the first time around that you know your stuff. And then when you write your personal statement, write about it. Write about the challenges you've faced at two different schools and how you've grown from it. I wouldn't write your entire statement about the schools alone, but there's nothing wrong with talking about how you would have done it differently. Or how you were motivated enough to take classes over again, etc. You can do this 🙂 We'll have our fingers crossed for you

I am going to recommend you take the two W's as your sGPA is damaged as-in (its 2.5 right?).... Yeh take the W's

Since your GPA is already at 2.5, I would take the two W's to avoid lowering it any further. Good luck!

Leave the frat house. It's time to grow up. Best of luck!

I will give you honest advice from someone who has been in your shoes.

*4 years ago (my freshman year), I was in a sorority and received a 2.5 sGPA and 2.7oGPA that year. Although it was a great social experience, I realized that it was not at all conducive to my future plans, and thus dropped it to focus on my studies. It has taken these subsequent 4 years of almost all "4.0s" (1 B+, 1 A- and the rest solid As), to bring my sGPA to a 3.5 and my oGPA to a 3.7.
It took a lot of perseverance, sacrifice, passion and determination to transform my academic record in the way I did.
Moral of my story: do what it takes to succeed in your career, if you truly have the stamina and desire to pursue this field.

--> Take the "W's", drop your fraternity, and absolutely rock the remainder of your undergraduate career (you need to shoot for solid A's in all your classes, like I did, with the understanding that a couple of those classes might dip slightly below that).

Do what's best for your future, the fun will come along the way.
Best of luck!

Eh, I'm in a fraternity and have a 3.8. It's called time management.

That was directed to the OP, not you. In his case I think it would be best.

Growing up did not refer to him being in a frat, but not taking school seriously.

slm266 is soooo right. In fact, he is the most correct of any person on the earth and a man will get nearer to dental school by abiding by his principles.

That really depends. You cannot generalize that all frats are bad. If the OP really wants to go to dental school, he'll make it work. Maybe he'll even find a study buddy in his frat once he actually makes the decision to start studying. I know plenty of frat guys who are hardworking, amazing people and manage to make it work really well for themselves.

Oh, well then I misinterpreted and didn't read the whole thread before I posted.

Most don't get the joke, but I thought that was pretty funny.

But seriously, Im just saying that it sounds like he has a hard time dedicating himself and that distancing himself from distractions will probably be good for him.

find your inner pirate and demand an A at the semesters end! ARRRRRR
