Hi guys. I'm new to SDN. Since I'm applying to medical schools next year, I'm trying to understand the admission process. Will GPA and MCAT score be factored into a final admission decision, even if you get an interview at that school? If so, how much will they affect the decision?

Yes, your GPA and MCAT score are used to evaluate you after the interview. They are factored into the admission decision. Exactly how much weight they have depends on the school (for example, some schools are more forgiving of low MCAT scores than others), but they are a critical part of any application.

I think it depends on the schools. Some schools don't look at your stats to make the final decision once you get interviewed.

i find that hard to believe. maybe some weigh it less, but to completely ignore it?

I think he means that some schools use GPA/MCAT to decide if the person will receive an interview. Once they receive the interview, it is up to other factors like personality, ECs, hobbies, etc. that will determine their admission.

Yea that's what I meant. For some schools, when they offer you the invites, it means that they think you are academically qualified, so they want to look at some other aspects of you.

depends on the school. certainly not the case at WasU

so that would pretty much mean a really strict interview cut based on gpa/mcat

Why so many ppl say so?
1) WashU actually does state that they put great emphasis on other espects of the applicants as well
2) They give interview invite to applicants with lower credentials.

it depends. some schools will use them to get you to the interview using them. then after, some interviewers dont even read ur files/numbers and you will get judged solely by them. every school has its own standard

essentially no one here knows unless they have been on an adcom and or have seen this first hand.

the way i think it works (based on what adcom have told me, including LizzyM 🙂) is that each part of your app gets a score on a scale set by adcom. categories may be weighed differently. earn enough points and you get an interview offer. after your interview is rated OR RANKED [SOME schools have interviewers rank the people that have interviewed....which is rough 🙁] you get a composite score. there are cut-offs for who gets in and who gets waitlisted based on how many students the school wants to admit based on what they think the yield will be.

Yes, it depends on the school. After the interview, some schools only take into account factors not including your #'s. Others take everything into account.
