gpa question, 3.8, 3.9, 4.0?

my question is, why does a 3.90 look SO MUCH better than a 3.88, but a 4.0 doesnt look any better than a 3.9??? anyone take psychology that would know, it befuddles me

Ok, I'll give it a shot, however I must put a disclaimer on that this is strictly my opinion, and that I am a nobody, so my opinion doesn't really count:

Well 3.88 vs 3.9, 3.9 is just one of those wholesome magic cut off numbers, kind of like when you go to the grocery store and something is priced for 3.99, instead of 4.00. In your head you aren't thinking $4 (at least I'm not), I see the 3 at the beginning and think, hey it's 3 bucks.

As far as the 3.9 vs 4.0 (remember my opinion is just an opinion with nothing to back it up), I think that people subconciously feel you tried harder if you got a 3.9. I know it sounds weird, but a 4.0 is perfect, so In my head perfect grades is associated with really smart people that probably didn't have to try as hard as somebody who made a b here or there. So making a 3.9 showed that they were human in some weird way, and that they were trying. Yea, this is odd logic, but it's my best stab at it.

b/c your mind remembers the last number more than the first. so in 3.9.... you recal "9" and in 3.88 you recall "8" and in 4.0 you recall "0"---- of the 9, the 8 and the 0.... 9 is greater so it seems greater in value.

it is just my conclusion b/c i've always prefered 99 over 100.

because 9 is a more profound number than 8 and 0...brain looks at that 9 and is like wow, thats a sweet number.

Is it strictly a visual thing? What if someone told you they had a 3.9, would it have the same effect?

No, I don't think its a visual thing. I think its psychological.

I think when people see a 4.0 they might thing, "ohhh, well they probably went to a real easy school" (especially when you see it with a 19 dat). Not saying its true, but thats what people might think.

Think about it -- if a school is easy, a moderately smart person and a VERY smart person both max out at an A, 4.0.

But a 3.9 shows the person struggled to get a 4.0 -- so it must be a hard school.

While all these sound ridiculous as hell, I think subconsciously people might think this.
