Just wondering how many A's does one need to pull off to recover from a fail?

It's all relative to how bad your GPA is and how many hours you've taken. But if you failed a pre-req you have to retake it.

Really all depends on your course load and other grades. If it helps, I had a 4.0 my last three years of undergrad after doing poorly my freshman year, including a failed course. In GPA calculators, if I remove the failed course and the less than stellar retake, my GPA increases by roughly .2

Failing a course does heavy damage to your GPA. You can mitigate it by doing well in future courses, but even in the best case scenario, it's still dragging you down a bit.
