I was just wondering what do Philippine med school weigh more, gpa or the NMAT score? My gpa is pretty lousy. I have some research background in biochem...but switched eventually to psychology cause it was kicking my ass (gpa) really bad. I just wanted to know how UERMMC, SLMC, DLSU, and ASMPH view gpa's. I read in a couple of threads that getting a good grade (90+) will make the schools overlook other mishaps.

Pls. respond...
Just talked to Mr. Vergara for the US NMAT...planning to take it this October 2007 in Chicage. Would love to be in med school for SY 2008!!! 🙂

As long as you meet their cutoff NMAT score, you'll be ok.

Grades (GPA or GWA) is very important for UP (after you made their cutoff of 90). They rarely take foreign grads but other schools are more lenient with grades especially non-locals as they know you are not taking the Philippines boards anyway.

Hi Roxanne. I'm also planning on taking the NMAT in Chicago this year. I think for the most part as long as you have a good NMAT score and meet the other requirements (and the $10,000 foreign student fee) you should be ok for the private schools like UE, FEU, St Lukes, etc. UST might be a little tougher. I'm in the same boat you are, as my GPA is pretty bad. You're still a lot of money to the school either way. To be safe I'd shoot for at least a 90 on the test.

Best of luck,
Michael

I'm also taking the NMATs in Chicago this October. Planning to attend UERMMC June 08. My GPA is not that great, but comming from my sister who is a UERM 4th year med student you should focus on the NMAT and GPA does not matter that much if you are a Fil am student with research or work experience. Also, they want the $10,000 check so getting in is a little easier. Hope this helps.

Also, which MCAT book are you using to study?

Good luck,
Rocky

Hey Rocky,

What do you mean by work experience? Do you mean, work in a medical-related field? I interned and still continue to work at a dermatology office, but I haven't done much research since my 2nd undergrad year! Let me know please?!

By the way, I am using The Berkeley Review MCAT books 😛

Melanie,

Work experience does not have to be in the medical field. I think it just shows the admissions board that you have been out in the real world, know work ethics, etc. I think medical schools are veering away from students that only excel academically but they also want applicants who are well rounded and mature. Its always nice to have a good work resume to go with your transcript.

I worked for a large public univeristy in academic advising and admissions for roughly 6 years before I decided to apply to medical school. Also, to give myself experience in the medical field I joined medical missions to the Philippines. Last February I voulunteered as a support staff member for PAGES. Its a group of Filipino and foreign doctors that spend 2 weeks doing Maxillofacial and general lump and bump surgery. We performed about 300 surgeries. It was a great life changing experience and I made good connections. I will be participating this comming february again.

^ I'm working too. I was supposed to go immediately to med school this year but then decided to give myself a break and work for a while. I think it's also good to experience working in a different field so we could know if we really want to pursue medicine as a profession. I already applied for med school next year but still waiting fro the results.:scared:
