GPAs between 3.1 and 3.3...interviews?

Acceptances?

What was the positive factor(s) that helped overcome the gpa?

10 interviews and 2 acceptances - 2 MD and 1 DO. I didn't go to all interview though.
Everything else on my app was great, except one school dinged me for not enough leadership activities. I tried to bring up my gpa once, and the school acted like it wasn't a big deal.

Makes sense. Why would a medical school care about an applicant's GPA? That's just crazy talk.

2+1=3 no?

The 2 and 3 are awfully close on my keyboard. Design flaw? I stand corrected. 🙂

Also: the point I was trying to make was that gpa matters, but in the context of an otherwise good application apparently some schools are willing to think that other measures of academic ability, some more objective (mcat) and some less (lors) can overcome a mediocre gpa.

I also am a non trad, and I'm under the impression that the longer one has been out of school the less gpa matters. (but only to a point!)

decent MCAT, good work experience, "disadvantaged" background, Master's degree, good LORs, and good recent grade trend.

It took a long time to get in.. you just have to keep working at it

almost in this crew, my GPA is slightly under 3.4, i have 1 interview, 1 acceptance (MD, didn't apply DO).

3.36 with 7 iviews and 2 acceptances so far

ziggydOc, and jj6vcb, are you non-trad applicants? Nice results.

took a year off after undergrad but i don't think that technically counts as non-trad. i'm 23 years old.

i know a guy with a 3.4 and 34 mcat. Hasn't been accepted anywhere in three yrs. Med schools want more than just numbers nowadays.

5th year senior (but first time applicant)... added a chem major during years 4/5 of undergrad to boost my science background

This is very true...I think that if you have a low gpa and a somewhat low mcat you'll still be considered if you have an interesting/unique history.

Wow, 1 interview and 1 acceptance....way to go! Most people have to get 3 or 4 interviews before they get an acceptance.

Same thing here. 3.35 UG GPA, 4.0 Master's GPA (research based.. 3 years of a PhD program), 31 MCAT, 27 at time of acceptance.

It's not easy, but if you work hard enough to redeem yourself, it's possible to get an acceptance.

ADCOM's don't like slackers. Hell, even the residency directors that come and talk to us say "we screen based on GPA.. it's an easy way to tell if the applicant is a motivated, independent learner."

I used to be frustrated with the system, until I matriculated into medical school and saw first hand, the dedication it takes to succeed here. Even in a spoon-fed program, there are countless hours that we spend trying to connect the dots.

Not a single interview yet at an MD school after 2 cycles, cGPA=~3.2, even with a >>30 MCAT. This is even with stellar grades in the SMP I am attending this year. It also sucks being a white male, even though I came from a disadvantaged background.

However, DO schools have seemed to love me, 3 interviews this cycle already. I worked in EMS for awhile and they all seem to be interested in my former healthcare career.

There is hope but I am not holding my breathe for any MD schools. They are just less forgiving.

What schools did you apply to and how early did you apply. It's hard to believe that you would not get an interview at the school you did an SMP at.
