GPR Programs, seeking help while researching programs

If you are a new grad or currently in a GPR that is more surgery/anesthesia focused, could you share where you're at and be honest about your experiences.

Looking for GPR programs that take call frequently, have a significant amount of time and exposure to sx/ anesthesia/ oral medicine/ path etc. I have found some programs that say they do "1 week doing anesthesia, 2 weeks doing medicine" which I feel is not quite enough exposure.

VA seems to have great options but I have hear they are quite competitive so want to broaden my search.

This might be out of date, but UNM and University of Utah had really great programs when I applied. I don’t know if taking call would get you much valuable experience. Taking call (at a California VA) was pretty much just doing gauze extractions in the ER.

I'm pretty sure that every GPR program has a week of anesthesia, along with a rotation with ER and internal medicine as part of the requirements of being a GPR program.

I'm also in a VA GPR and our on call schedule is just telling the patients to go to the ER or come to the clinic the next day as a walk-in.
Based on my interviews last year, the VA are not the best for frequent on calls because we only serve Vets.

Frequent on calls are more level 1 trauma center gpr programs, if thats what you want. The issue with that is the OMFS residents will usually take the more interesting surgical procedures and leave you with the scraps.

Thanks for the input all, you are right that there is limited anesthesia experience. I have found some programs up to four weeks I believe.

Also, thanks for the input about taking call. Good to know.

Kings county hospital GPR in Brooklyn. 24hr call with OS residents and you get to see trauma cases from wiring mandible fractures, suturing lacerations (even ears), gsw etc. Lots of surgical exts to go around
