I have a general question for anyone who knows, a friend of mine is graduating in dec of this year, obviously has missed match for this year; he will be apply for match september of this year for 2012, but in the mean time, are there residency programs that will allow you to join mid year (aka in dec after graduation?) is that even an option?

thanks!

yes, its called off cycle.

many residencies have off cycle start dates, and some have unexpected openings and will take in a new resident.

It is possible but not that common and, unlike "on-cycle", there's no central location where you can find an apply for positions. The resources will be specialty specific and will require some digging.

We have an off cycle IM resident at our hospital.

I'm sure there are plenty of IM and FP programs that have open spots and would be happy to have someone start working there ASAP

I agree with gutonc -- it causes lots of logistical headaches, and so it's not very common. There are huge administrative advantages to orienting, training, promoting/graduating folks in a group, and so most places would just as soon not take anyone mid-cycle at a junior level. There are however places that find themselves seriously shorthanded because folks leave, go into labor, etc. But I think "plenty" or "many" are not the adjectives I would use to describe these opportunities. There are some out there but will be actually kind of hard to ferret out.
