Hi...Please I need some help, I'm about to finish my first O-chem class, and I'm getting a C at PCC (pasadena city college), and my plan is to apply to pharmacy school for fall 2008, do i need to reconsider my plans? will a C get in the way of me getting into any schools at all? I have an overall 3.66 GPA, and have volunteering hours? please some one tell me, I really wanna know, am veryy confused about my goals and plans.
thank you
lucy

A couple a C's won't kill you, but since you got it at a CC, adcom's will question it. Pharmacy school programs are challenging, very similar to upper-div university science courses. So if they see you struggle with CC classes, they will have doubts.

Just make sure you try and ace everything from here on out (and avoid C's) and you should be ok. Good luck.

Obviously you're going to have to retake the class and get nothing less than an "A" to be seriously considered by a pharmacy school. Unfortunately, no matter if you're applying to pharm school, dental school, or med school, organic chemistry is scrutinized the most by adcom's of all these schools because organic probably applies the most to each type of field. I'm not trying to be a pessimist and rain on your parade, but it's important to receive things straight up rather than sugar-coated.

thank you for giving me some hope, but, PCC is known for its science department in the nation, we (not I but my school) compete with students from Caltech and UC's in many different aspects of science. It is also extremely competitive; if you go through the experience at PCC, going through UC upper division science classes should be a walk in the park.

well, thank you for being straight forward; I guess I'm just gonna have to study real hard for the final exam which is coming up next week. But, my chances of getting a B are very slim.

I am not here to debate whether PCC has a tough science dept or not. I'm sure it does and am glad you'd be able to handle upper div UC courses like it's nothing. But I highly doubt many adcom's (or many people outside of PCC) know how tough PCC's science dept is. If I was on the adcom and I see PCC, I wouldn't be able to distinguish that between the CC down the street.

It's all about perception and when you sort through thousands of applications, seeing C's from a JC will not catch anyone's attention (at least not in a positive way).

If you have time, I recommend taking it again for a better grade. No one that's posted in this thread is on an adcom, so it's hard to say what an adcom would do with your C in O-chem. It might get by or it might not. Just retake it. Or you could just let the 'C' ride and see what happens - if you're a betting person. 😉

Good luck.

well I'd wanna retake the class if I know it will comepletely change my position; but is there a big chance that they will take that positive look at me once they know I took the class again, and I aced it, or it just depends on who's looking at my application?

At this point, I'd just concentrate on studying for the final and hope for the best. Then like I said, try your best with your remaining pre-req's. You seemed to have aced your other classes so one C won't kill you. However, if you receive another C in o-chem 2, that's a huge red flag. I think an A in o-chem 2 will look really good.

But focus on finishing all your pre-req's first before thinking about retaking anything. That's my opinion.

I find that a bit difficult to believe..

i hear it's all about gpa rather than individual classes for most schools. So, if u get an A in ochem 2 and finish a bachelors u'll be ok w/ out retaking that class.

But, i have not applied yet, so i am not sure if i am the most credible source here.

yea, well school's known as caltech north (and not only because of the location 😕 ), but it does have a very strong math and biological science dept, ranked second transfer school in state.

organic chemistry is my worst subject. I had a C in both first and second semester, but i managed to still get interviews from pharmacy schools. My averaged gpa was 3.5. I guess a couple of c's is not that bad if your gpa is really high.

I've never met a pharmacist who thinks that O-Chem applies that strongly to their field. As a matter of fact I've never met a pharmacist who can even remember ANY of O-Chem. (And I've worked with literally hundreds of pharmacists.)

Just keep trying, you don't need an A.

I second this... If you are doing well in everything else - but you get a C in O-Chem one, life is NOT over. You just need to step it up for Org II.

Make sure you set the stage for success next semester. If you are taking Org II - Get the best professor by any and all means necessary. Secondly, dumb down the rest of your classes. Take Stats, Microeconomics, and tennis in conjunction with Org II - this will minimize the amount of studying for other courses. If you know you are going to need everybit of help open to you - I suggest you make the relationships now!

Doing this wont ensure you get an A or B in Org II - but it sure will help.

Good luck - and stay focused

Im in your same boat. I however, am taking a very heavy load. Org I , physics I, anatomy & physiology II, and trig. Oh yeah, I also work as a pharmacy tech about 20-25 hours a week (I have almost 2 years experience.) Do you think adcom will look and see, hey, she was taking a heavy load, working, AND has experience and got A's and B's in all of her other classes that semester...Maybe she's good enough to take in?

PCC is a pretty difficult school when it comes to their science department. I guess you just have to find the right teacher. I recommend taking Sweimeh next semester if her class is not already filled.

I already registered for Ganapathi, I heard Swimeh's not as good either.

Yea I feel ya...I work about 30 hours a week too, and I have A's and B's in all my other classes, right now taking Mol. bio, psych, physics. and O-chem It sucks...

Yeah ochem's kicking my butt. i have to take the acs organic exam which covers all of ochem. which means i have about two thousand pages of review. Ochem's evil, its all i think about now. makes me actually look forward to physical chem.

Never... Ever... Say that... hahaha - Good luck on that exam (I've never heard of it) I have to take O-Chem II next semester, after taking Ochem I in the summer (not by my choosing) Hopefully all will work out. The rest of my GPA isnt bad - but man, that class blows.

Have you already taken O Chem during the summer, or are you going to?? I took it during the summer, and it was horrible!!! However, I did do pretty good in the class, because I had to study so much every night to keep up with the one-chapter-a-day format my teacher had. And, we had a test every week and a half so I didn't have to retain those friggin mechanisms that long. Anyway, good luck!!!
