Grade Inflation

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Another thing about MIT, IIRC, there are no +/- grades so it is either A or B or C and that makes it all the more harsh

Tell me about it! It is said that the most glorious grade is an A- and the most frustrating a B+.. since a B+ = B- for all intensive purposes. I calculated my GPA on a whim with the B+ = 3.3 A- = 3.7 (we know our +/- on internal grade reports). My GPA went up 0.15 pts 🙁.

On an unrelated note my friend told me that some law schools calculate undergrad A+s as more than 4.0, so many of the top students have like 4.3/4.0 and stuff like that.

I wouldn't say berkeley is too much harder than other colleges, and I'm sure a lot of people overexxagerate its difficulty for whatever reason. i haven't found it to be impossible so far.

It's just the only thing is that it may be difficult for a lot of people to get consistently high grades, because only a limited percentage (normally 20-30% in premed classes) will get A's. i wouldn't say that's traditional, bell-cruve grading, but it's definitely not inflated grades.

The issue is for these people to try to remain competitive with the more severe grade inflation seen in some of the private schools. >700 people apply to med school each year, and it's definitely not possible for all of them to have really GPAs...and so in order to stay in the competitive GPA bracket they complain they have to work harder than their peers and such.

I don't know how much merit grade inflation complaints really have or whether tis' just an excuse. i've only been to berkeley.

That seems a bit high for A's. I would imagine the percentage of A's is similar to that at UCLA, which is often below 20%.

Grade inflation is real. Particularly at schools like Stanford. 😀

You used to be able to drop your class on the day of the final!

went to an Ivy--I majored in science, minored in humanities. My minor GPA is .56 higher than my major GPA.

It's not the science classes that have the huge curves--it's the english classes where you meet once a week for two hours, and only have to turn in 3 papers all semester--one 2 pages, one 4 pages, and one 10 pages. Best class ever.

*cough* Intents and purposes *cough*

Yup. Those Stanford babies take care of their own. I believe the policy has been changed since the early 2000's. It was getting pretty bad, heh, the way people were dropping classes with impunity whenever they wanted.
