I tried loking this up and didn't find a good answer so I thought I would put it here...

At my school our grading is H/HP/P/MP/F... MP stands for marginal pass and is from 70-74.99

I am in anatomy and am sitting at the top part of the MP category... I wasn't too worried because we have 2 test left (our 3rd unit exam and a final 2 days later)... but I got sick (with 75% of my classmates) and I am having trouble getting out of bed to study.

Is it going to hurt my residency chances if I get an MP in one class but do better after this in subsequent courses. I did really bad the first exam and was doing better in the class before this fever, coughing, headache, aches, etc. started. I am worried though that if I keep feeling this bad I won't be able to make the grade I need to get the P on the transcript. I feel like a train ran over me!

sorry that you're sick, that really sucks. I'm a fellow M1, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but from what I see a pass is a pass is a pass, so an MP is not going to hurt you in any way. Besides, I know for certain that pre-clinical grades are close to the bottom of the priority list for residency programs.

Also, if you're entire class is sick, the average might be low and they might need to scale it accordingly.

Watch anatomy videos in bed. Aclands+Wisconsin = good times.

Pretty sure you already know the answer to this question. That being said, you will get a 50/50 response of support and sarcasm so be prepared.

My advice:
1. MP is still passing. Don't get too bent out of shape over this, just try not to make a habit of it
2. Getting sick happens and unfortunately, you just have to deal with it. Hydrate, caffinate, and motivate yourself into studying

-best of luck

Hope you feel better.

Be careful though, you could even lose that MP. That's motivation to keep pushing forward.

Here at MCV, they make clear that a marginal pass is not really considered a passing grade. They will promote you to the next year if you only have one marginal, but any more than 1 and you're looking at remediation.

Residency programs don't think too much about the first two year's grades unless they see something anomalous. It's possible, then, that a marginal pass could raise some eyebrows, but there's no way to predict any, if any, effect on your residency chances.

We have a policy wrt the flu here that allows you to take exams out of schedule if you've been prevented from studying and attending class. Perhaps your school has something similar?

I feel your pain, though. I got a 56 on my first anatomy practical.

I had H1N1 last week and managed to get it done. When you get better, get caught up with 10 hour study days. It sucks.

With that said, I think there will ultimately be a difference between a H and a MP. Keep grinding away and get that grade up to a Pass.
