I applied last year with no luck. I have gotten a full-ride to a graduate program which would last for the next two years and start in August. I really want my MD though and am only doing this to improve my application. I already submitted my AMCAS app assuming that I would just drop out of graduate school if I was accepted, but now I am starting to second-guess myself since some of the school websites say they will only consider you after you finish your graduate programs. Should I continue filling out secondary applications or just try again next year..

you are best to finish your grad program once you begin it. adcoms will not look favorably upon you leaving a program...it may make them think you are going to leave their program when the time comes.

also, i have heard mixed reviews on how straight grad programs look to adcoms vs a smp. a smp usually proves you can do med school coursework, something you do not get at a reg masters program.
just food for thought.

best wishes on your journey

Don't start something serious, if you aren't going to finish it. Most grad programs offer various forms of free rides and if you don't get into medical school this cycle, chances are you will get the same offer at X grad school next year. You will make it harder to get into medical school, while in a program that has an expected graduation date in 2 years.

Med schools are going to expect you to finish any degree program you start before they let you matriculate. I have actually seen on medical school web sites/applications where they specifically state that if you are enrolled in any kind of degree program it must be finished before you can start med school.

If you start the Master's degree you will need to finish it and this will keep you out of med school the next two years. If you drop out of the Master's adcoms will not look favorably upon this and they will not accept you if you clearly have another year of grad work to complete. Also, unless it is an SMP (which it doesn't sound like from your post) med schools aren't all that impressed with graduate degrees and grades. So, don't start this degree unless this is a degree you really want and feel will benefit your career, free ride or not.

If you go the grad school route, finish it and then re-apply in approx 2 years.

Just wanted to chime in on the "SMP vs. Grad school" argument. There are people on this forum will tell you that Grad school is not looked on favorably by Adcom. I don't know if it is their "opinion" or they have facts. But there are people on this forum who went the Grad school route and re-applied to Med School and got many interviews and acceptances. Bottom line, do what you think will best help "you" become a better applicant in the future for Med School.

I am a perfect example of this problem. I began a two year grad school course that allowed me to take medical school courses. I was accepted to medical school however I had to defer the year because the school would not let me matriculate until I finished with my research/thesis. Granted it could have been the graduate program that had given me this opportunity, but that's something I will never truely know. Choose a graduate program that does not have any research/thesis projects and then reapply accordingly.
